Following up: my 8320 screen now reads “App Error 523″ and “Reset”. I unplugged the USB cable, removed the battery, removed the media card, plugged back in the USB cable. Phone boots, the meter for Task 10 moves a bit then the same “App Error 523″ comes back. I keep enetering “reset” every time it comes up and the meter for Task 10 makes progress each time.

Other forums are suggesting that “App Error 523″ is related to MMS. Whatever it is, my phone appears to be screwed. Thanks for nothing.

Bottom line: do not attempt this, the instructions as posted do not work.

BB 8320, DM 5.0, DS 4.5, followed instructions exactly, everything was going fine until task 10 of 11. It has seemingly hung up 1/2 way through that task, even using the “show details” function results in no progress on the meter. I’m going to leave it alone for another hour as I am afraid to render my phone useless.

After reading through all of the posts I am wondering if the instructions should tell people to remove their media cards.

This is me again it seems that I solve the problem. The point is that I removed vendor.xml after Desktop Manager installation and before installation of 4.5 Device software. As I figured out installation of 4.5 Device Software makes another copy of the same vendor.xml in the same location. So the lesson learnt is to delete vendor.xml AFTER you install new (desired) version of Device software. Anyway thanks a lot for detailed instructions!

Hello to everybody,

I have BB 8100 with 4.2 device software. Its a nightmare for me because it doesn’t have Russian language and I forced to write russian words by english characters.

I followed all instructions but Desktop Manager had not detected new available device software. Of course I made an installation of the device software before. I tried also to find updates manually by browsing and going to application loader files. But after clicking OK Desktop Manager says that there are no files suitable for my phone.

Can anybody help? Is it possible that problem caused device software that I downloaded from some asian wireless provider?

I have version 5.0 desktop manager, downioaded the upgarde software 4.5 for the curve 8320 on rogers, and when i go to instal it says i have the lastest version already. i have the 4.2

I got the spinning hourglass thing and I just clicked “cancel” on the PC. The phone booted up and the restore commenced. I guess we’ll see how it goes from here . . .

i was updating my bb curve 8330 and my brother when it was almost halfway done cancelled it.. now the screen went white and it has a box with shapes in it (a circle, a square, and a triangle)…

I got a little worried there when my 8130 got stuck on task 10 for over an hour. (Waiting for device initialisation). So I unplugged it, took the battery out, and then took the 1Gb Micro SD card out. Put the battery back in and re-connected the PC cable to the phone. it booted up , asked some permission question and continued with task 11 – restoring data. Oh yeah, i also had to reset my wallpaper and font. Now everything is fine and working perfectly. Thanks.

so i think i just bricked my phone. its an 8320 from tmobile but i unlocked it for att. i tried doing the tmobile one but it got to the part right after it deleted all the applications and just stopped working, now it wont connect because there is nothing to connect to. i just have a blank screen with a box in the middle with three shapes and an X thru it. has the number 507 under it. what can i do to remedy this? the BB wont connect to DM cuz there is no software at all on the device? any thoughts?

Just updated my T-mobile Pearl 8120 4.2 to the 4.5 with these instructions. I followed the instructions and had absolutely NO problems. I was really nervous about doing it after hearing about all the problems some have had. Just wanted to say thank you, thank you, thank you!!!

During the update process my blackberry curve 8310 got disconnected and now it is an unrecognized device by windows and the blackberry desktop manger doesn’t recognize that it is connected, the phone also will not boot up, the led status light flashess twice when i attempt to turn it on and then nothing, when pluged into charger or computer light flashes twice every 3 secs

Hi, I Have had OS 4.5 installed on my BB 8310 Curve whih is great, but however have lost BB Messenger & Password Keeper, I have tried to downloadload the BB Messnenger on the handset as directed by the BB web-site but it tells me i have the incorrect software i.e not 4.1 or 4.2. Any ideas? Thanks.

i’ve got a bb curve 8320 and have waited patiently for rim/pocketmac to come out with a system by which mac users can upgrade their device software.

i’m tired of waiting and i don’t feel like asking pc friends for four hours of their computers’ time to upgrade.

will rim ever develop an upgrade process for mac users? is there a workaround that anyone is familiar with?

if you have a unlocked phone, and you upgrade it, it will lock the phone. I have unlocked psp and when i tried to get new software to it, it locked, so i had to unlock again! (PSP OS: windows vista)

i got my update from http://www.t-mobile.com/bbupgrade , its too damn easy to update, but it took almost 4 hours. now i’m trying to update the firmware to 4.3 or later so i can get some apps.. does any have an idea of where can i find the firmware4.3 or later? thanks!!

I have seen a few people ask but no reply:: If you have an Unlocked At&T Curve 8310 that you now use on T-Mobile, what OS should I use? It seems like a simple question but I don’t know the first thing about tech and I don’t want to end up like some on this thread. So shold I upgrade to the latest OS thru At&T even though I use it on t-mobile, or od I get T-mobile’s newest os? Also, what about the Desktop Manager? Are they carrier specific or can I download any Desktop manager? Any and all help is very much appreciated.

Well hmm, I have a blackberry curve 8310 – it upgraded fine. None of my hands are having fits.

As I mentioned in a previous post, it just takes patience… they should give better status to let you know it IS working while you’re sitting there fretting over the install – but if you sit on your hands, or just go fishing, while its working, it turns out just fine. I’ve upgraded 3 friends’ phones as well – all three went fine.

If you have a Curve 8310, DON’T upgrade to 4.5. If you do, remove SD card if installed. If you’re lucky, after the upgrade the volume from the ear speaker will be audible when you make/receive calls. If not, then at least you’ll have GPS. You might be able to re-insert your microSD card without the phone crashing, and if you can, reformat it in the phone, which might help. Otherwise, petition RIM to release a stable, bug-free OS for their SmartPhones that doesn’t give with one hand and take away with the other.

Used this guide to upgrade my Sprint 8830 from 4.2 to 4.5

All I cna say, is thank you for taking the time to post this, worked great. Like Mikeeb said…parts of the process did take FOREVER adn a couple times I though the install had locked up. But I just left it alone and check back every now and then. Eventually everything completed and all is great now. Thanks again!

I don’t know if this makes a difference, but I downloaded the handset software from the sprint site, and i got the desktop manager directly from the RIM site. So I didn’t have to deal with deleting the vendor.xml file at all.

HELP… I just upgraded to 4.5 and at my 8310 does is reboot over and over again. What went wrong? can it be fixed? Can I go back to my old 4.2.2 OS?
