At at&t you have never been required to sign a contract if you don’t mind paying full price for a phone. Full price is $150 more than 2 year contract pricing. I don’t understand why this is such hot news.

this is nothing new. rogers does it. you just don’t get the promo plans or prices. it’s like when telus launched the 8830 ‘world phone’. not new either all gsm berries (that i’ve had, anyway) have always been world phones

thanks for the heads up. At CTIA, we purchased some pre-paid AT&T SIMs before realizing our folly. It would have been great to know we could have gone month to month without incurring a penalty.

But still…kudos to Verizon for publicizing it. It’s definitely a huge step forward in the market to announce something like this, especially for smart phone users (who often get hit the hardest on data plans).

Most carriers have been doing this for forever… I’ve never had a contract with AT&T. Every time I get a new phone, I pay for it outright without a contract and setup my monthly plan accordingly.

They’ve tried to give me a contract before – but the only time it’s ever been non-negotiable is for their promotional pricing plans (unlimited minutes, etc.)…
