Never fail is a great solution, but horribly expensive. For a large company to have more than an hour of outage, is just very poor planning. For years, I’ve been working with clients and even in SOHO organizations, installing backup solutions that can have a company back in service within minutes. One of the easiest and perhaps most reliable is to keep an offline spare attached to the same sql db on a different machine. If the bes fails, simply disable it and start the services up on the second machine (same BES service name, same licenses, etc)….. Very simple, no additional cost and can be even done in vmware..

DAYS to recover from a hard drive failure!?
That’s pretty poor operations.
We have too many users spread across too many servers to use most of the conventional (usually replication based) strategies. We just use RIM’s disaster recovery recommendations… we have servers up with no users at remote locations in the same BlackBerry domain as production – as well as back up SQL servers. If main site goes down, we bring up a remote site, and drag and drop the VIP’s who need BB service first… We’ve never had to use that method. We have had outages before (server failure), but were back up on a new server within hours. Our hardware/facilities team rocks…

My BES is a VMware ESX virtual machine. The VM files are on a NetApp filer, which gets snapshotted and sent offsite every 2 hours. I keep 1 day worth of bi-hourly snaps, 5 dailies, and 3 weeklies. There are 8 host machines which are clustered in high availability mode, so if one goes down another picks up all the running VM’s instantly. This is all well and good as long as the Firm’s internet connection doesn’t go down. In that case, our virtual BES backup at IBM MessageLabs picks up and we’re off to the races. My Firm and I haven’t found a better solution than what we have in place, and it hasn’t failed us yet.
