The certificate is simply a starting point. It’s a baseline employers can use to gauge someone with basic knowledge. The concepts, knowledge are assumed to be there. Practical experience is not assumed with the certification. But at least the employer knows that the person can start to work with the technology and not have as steep a learning curve than someone who doesn’t have it.

I’ve been a trainer for Microsoft’s MCSE programs and come across lots of people with different experience level and it shows in class in their questions and understanding of the labs. It’s also important to stress that the certification loses its value if you don’t work with it on an ongoing basis. Technology changes fast and knowledge without experience also diminishes over time much more quickly.

Those are my 2 cents.

I took the test (410) at WES and passed and it wasn’t hard. It certainly nice to obtain but I hope my 10 years of suppporting BES / Blackberry speaks to my knowledge more.

My biggest issue is that RIM is taking sooooo long to get some of the certification exams our of beta. I took exams BCX-210 and BCX-212 on May 6th (5 months ago) and July 3rd (3 months ago)respectively. I am STILL waiting on results.

I also agree, I have employees who are certified and not certified in various technologies. Both are just as capable. Interviews and testing is more likely to result in a better candidate than a program certification.

I agree with the previous statement. Its a piece of paper just like people with college degrees. They aren’t always qualified for the job.

Now for the topic on hand. I would take the cert but ill be damned if I could figure out how to do it. Blackberry’s website leads you in circles just to get a testing site. I would like to take it just to pick up stuff I don’t know.

Its the same as having your MCSE just because you have a piece of paper that say you know everything there is to know about Microsoft does not mean you are smart or know what you are doing. I know developers that had their MCDBE or what ever they call it and they were the stupidest person I ever knew and I wouldent let them touch the DBs as I knew more of them from real world experience with setting them up and running them. Again its just a piece of paper that some people earn for taking a course some people are smarter with it some are not. so people do good in school cause they know how to memorize but have no idea how to apply that knowledge.
