BlackBerry Media Sync for Mac hands-on

It seems as though RIM has finally heard the cries of many Mac BlackBerry (MacBerry?) users. Earlier this week they released a ‘Preview’ build of BlackBerry Media Sync for Mac, and I had to give it a test run. In general, it works as advertised and syncing playlists is surprisingly fast. Unfortunately, you can’t just drag over iTunes albums as is, but have to make a playlist out of each.

Here’s some things to keep in mind:

This is a ‘preview’ build. RIM seems afraid of Mac development and has gone out of their way to tell users that their not legally responsible if Mac Media Sync roxXors yurz blakberreez. You have been warned.
Mac Media Sync will not work with Pocket Mac or Missing Sync. Which would be fine if RIM had also released a Mac Desktop Manager, but one step at a time, I guess.

46% of BlackBerry Storm owners ‘somewhat satisfied’

The fine ladies and gents over at the ChangeWave HotWire blog have conducted a survey amongst 61 new owners of the BlackBerry Storm, pitting the results against a similar survey conducted in July 2007 for new owners of the original iPhone. The results?

The overall satisfaction rating given by new owners of the Blackberry Storm can, at best, be characterized as lukewarm. One in three Storm owners (33%) said they were Very Satisfied with their new model, well below the 52% Very Satisfied rating given by all current owners of BlackBerry smart phones.

Simply put, the Storm satisfaction rating is similar to that of mid-tier smart phone manufacturers like Nokia (32%), Motorola (32%), HTC (31%) and Samsung (30%). While far from bad, it’s mediocre – which means it’s a potential concern regarding RIM’s head-to-head battle with Apple.

In comparison, the original iPhone’s Very Satisfied rating (77%) was more than double that of the new BlackBerry Storm (33%). Importantly, the Storm’s Unsatisfied rating (14%) is three times higher than that of the original iPhone (5%). The HotWire blog doesn’t think the Storm is a dud, however but merely suffered from an unusual array of initial launch glitches that brought its rating behind the average rating for other BlackBerry models.

I think it was quite fair of ChangeWave to compare the BlackBerry Storm against the 1st-gen iPhone. If RIM can continue to iterate on the Storm OS, who knows how the next-gen version will stack up against the iPhone 3G? You can see the key BlackBerry Storm likes and dislikes from the ChangeWave survey after the jump.

BlackBerry JDE 4.7 is now live!

God bless the Developer Support team at RIM; it’s Christmas Eve Eve and they’re still hard at work pumping out important tools for the BlackBerry development community. Last night the BlackBerry JDE 4.7 left beta and went live, and boy is it jam packed with features. Beyond updated device simulators and the full API set for the BlackBerry Storm, there’s new stuff like the ‘Set Theme Wallpaper’ feature, which provides the ability for an application to set the homescreen wallpaper.

You can see the full feature list after the jump, and download JDE 4.7 at the link below.

Our Danish friends are getting a nice little present from RIM and 3 just in time for Christmas, with the announcement of the BlackBerry Bold. 3Business is offering the BlackBerry Bold for DKK 319.20 on an 18 month contract or for DKK 1,999 straight up. You can find out more information at their website below, but make sure to check out our exhaustive BlackBerry Bold review first. Merry Christmas, Danes!

New Telus BlackBerry Storm shipment hitting stores today, get them while you can

Some friends at Telus just tipped us off that the Canadian carrier has received new shipments of the BlackBerry Storm 9530 that will hit stores today. We weren’t given any exact numbers, and it appears that only select Telus stores are receiving the delivery, but we were assured that ‘consumers now have the opportunity to get a Storm in time for the holidays and well into the New Year!

I’d recommended not taking any chances on this ‘New Year’ stuff and act now if you know you want a BlackBerry Storm. Otherwise, you might end up like the poor bastards above. If you find one, make sure to post on our BlackBerry Storm Chaser page, so the other members of the BlackBerry Nation will know where to get one!
