e-Mobile Today Professional BlackBerry Storm Edition (v.1.2) Reviewed!

PROs/CONs

The benefits of this application are both clear and numerous. Convenience is probably at an all-time high with this version, as you can scroll through your entire contact list at ease and contact anyone in your address book in any way (carrier pigeons at the discretion of your carrier). You have plenty of function without having your battery take much of a hit. And honestly, being able to view everything at once on a BlackBerry – in a very clean, aesthetically appealing way – has never been easier. The huge screen makes a difference.

Speaking of which, I am disappointed in the way E-Mobile Today chose to make use of the screen size and accelerometer. It seems that beyond being able to switch between regular and landscape mode, nothing changed. There is clearly space to add an extra day’s view for either the call log, tasks and appointments. And the tiny clock and date at the top of the screen should have been larger, as they look awkward – and, blatantly fitted for a screen at least half the size. Although there isn’t a price difference between the Storm’s professional edition and the usual professional edition made for other BlackBerry devices, they could have made these minor adjustments – which would have gone a long way. And, as this app is $30 without any expansion packs, the price may be hard to justify for some, especially without these minor yet critical improvements over the standard e-Mobile Today software.

PROs

  • Still the best looking app of its kind
  • Boasts a wide range of functions and convenient launching points for almost all tasks native to the BlackBerry
  • I encountered no bugs

CONs

  • Could have done more with the Storm’s screen: aesthetically and functionally
  • The price
  • Not much choice for the aesthetic

FINAL CONCLUSION

While some may find shelling out thirty bones for this piece of software a little ridiculous (check out the comments on my first review of e-Mobile Today), many seem to desire a piece of software just like this: something that looks great, offers quite a bit of function and convenience, and works without any glitches. The expansion packs are a little steeply priced ($9.95 each), so you may want to seriously consider whether or not you need weather, stocks or news in e-Mobile Today (for myself, I prefer RSS readers and the browser – particularly on the Storm – for news). I still think this is a great piece of software, though the software makers should have made more use of the screen size (perhaps in the ways I mentioned earlier?). For creatures of convenience, this is the app for you.

I love the program, and agree with a lot of the comments. The support team is great. I made a few requests (such as to allow your touch to highlight options), hopefully they will do that. With my fat fingers and no indication of where I am clicking, I continually mis-click. I have issues with phantom email counts appearing on the screen. I thought I fixed that by separating the messages, but it didn’t work. I still had to do battery pulls to fix it.

I agree that the pro edition should come with the extra plugins.

    ***Newbie question here***

Is there a way to have this software be the default opening screen after powering up instead of the menu? I’m sure if it’s the last application used it would stay on. Thanks!

Do they offer a trial? I cannot seem to find one. It is hard to justify spending $30 on something you cannot try out. This looks like something I really want but I want the ability to test it out.

Do not buy this! The fonts are small and impossible to click on. The program will not let you increase the font. Last, you cannot click on the item (like email) and have the program take you to the email. Now I know why they do not offer a trial!

Sorry guys, not going to try anything without a trial version – too many variables and opposing viewpoints. Even a 48hour trial would be fine.

    Chris,
e-Mobile Today Professional lets you increase the font in the application settings menu. And you CAN click on an email from within the application – which then takes you to your inbox. I have the sneaking suspicion that you purchased the regular version of e-Mobile Today, though even with that application I’m pretty sure you can enter your inbox and make the font larger also. Either way: to make the font large, hit the menu button and select the larger font option. To get to your inbox or a specific email from within the app, scroll over an email and click on the menu button, which should present you with the option of going to your inbox, replying, composing a new email, etc.

On an unrelated note, some of you have been complaining about this app diverting too much of the CPU away from other tasks. I’m not sure how consistently this is happening but mine was doing fine until this week, when everything apparently became sluggish (even after a few fresh reboots). I’ll try to talk to the guys over at e-Mobile Software to see what’s up.

    All the best,

    Jonathan

Do not purchase this software. It slows the Storm down and gives an error message whenever you reboot the phone. Then when you contact Mobihand for support they tell you to take out the battery. I did that numerous times then when they didnt have any more tricks up their sleeves, they basically stop helping me.

Have investigated 12 Task/PIM apps for Storm. Installed/tested 4 of them – just downloaded and installed e-Mobile Today for Storm. My assessment :

    - Trouble free install.

    Pros :
    - Cleanest, best looking PIM/Task app I’ve seen for the Storm by far
    - Relatively easy navigation for where it lets you go
    - Didn’t seem to have the performance issue others have mentioned, but then I only used it for about 10 min before I removed it

    Cons :
    - No flexibility; General Setting options are Font Color, Font Size and whether to Automatically switch to foreground – that’s it; Task view options are Show Completed Y/N, View by Categories (just by category, not Category within Date) or View by Month – default is View by Date – and that’s it
    - No added functionality – no colour coding of Categories, no additional sort capabilities, etc.

It’s almost like they decided to go with minimal functionality but get the look right. And that they did. Maybe that works if you’re just looking for a single screen to collect all your PIM apps together in one spot. But under that it’s all native BB app functionality, nothing else.

This puts them WAY ahead on the look & feel front at the moment. However, the others I’ve tried (Agendus & PocketDay) offer WAY more functionality for roughly the same price, in addition to the “single screen” concept. Either e-mobile Today is going to have to add a ton of functionality real fast, or all the others are going to kick butt once they get the look & feel right – and then the price of e-mobile Today is going to have to drop way down to reflect the comparative value it doesn’t offer.

Sorry – don’t mean to be mean and am not going to ask for my money back, but $30 for this app is way steep. My heavy task management focus means it’s still Agendus for now as it does what I need and while clunky in its current incarnation I can make it work, and I’ll try Pocket Informant and PocketDay/PocketLists as well when they have proper Storm versions.
