PROs/CONs
The benefits of this application are both clear and numerous. Convenience is probably at an all-time high with this version, as you can scroll through your entire contact list at ease and contact anyone in your address book in any way (carrier pigeons at the discretion of your carrier). You have plenty of function without having your battery take much of a hit. And honestly, being able to view everything at once on a BlackBerry – in a very clean, aesthetically appealing way – has never been easier. The huge screen makes a difference.
Speaking of which, I am disappointed in the way E-Mobile Today chose to make use of the screen size and accelerometer. It seems that beyond being able to switch between regular and landscape mode, nothing changed. There is clearly space to add an extra day’s view for either the call log, tasks and appointments. And the tiny clock and date at the top of the screen should have been larger, as they look awkward – and, blatantly fitted for a screen at least half the size. Although there isn’t a price difference between the Storm’s professional edition and the usual professional edition made for other BlackBerry devices, they could have made these minor adjustments – which would have gone a long way. And, as this app is $30 without any expansion packs, the price may be hard to justify for some, especially without these minor yet critical improvements over the standard e-Mobile Today software.
PROs
- Still the best looking app of its kind
- Boasts a wide range of functions and convenient launching points for almost all tasks native to the BlackBerry
- I encountered no bugs
CONs
- Could have done more with the Storm’s screen: aesthetically and functionally
- The price
- Not much choice for the aesthetic
FINAL CONCLUSION
While some may find shelling out thirty bones for this piece of software a little ridiculous (check out the comments on my first review of e-Mobile Today), many seem to desire a piece of software just like this: something that looks great, offers quite a bit of function and convenience, and works without any glitches. The expansion packs are a little steeply priced ($9.95 each), so you may want to seriously consider whether or not you need weather, stocks or news in e-Mobile Today (for myself, I prefer RSS readers and the browser – particularly on the Storm – for news). I still think this is a great piece of software, though the software makers should have made more use of the screen size (perhaps in the ways I mentioned earlier?). For creatures of convenience, this is the app for you.
