BOLT BlackBerry Browser

When BlackBerry Cool became the first BlackBerry website on the Internet to provide free invites to the BOLT BlackBerry Browser private beta, we never thought so many people would have such rabid interest. After thanking you the readers for providing ‘substantial feedback’ on the initial beta release, Bitstream let us know that an updated version is being pushed to users with BlackBerry-specific enhancements. You can find the full list of enhancements after the jump.

For those that haven’t tried the BOLT Browser yet, we have some great news: the ‘berrycool’ code now has unlimited referrals! So head over to the BOLT download page and tell Bitstream ‘berrycool’ sent you.

In addition, Bitstream has set up an email address for people who want to share their experiences using BOLT and possibly be quoted (with expressed permission) in BOLT’s PR efforts. The address is pr4beta@boltbrowser.com. Bitstream has also set up a support form for those with technical issues at: http://www.boltbrowser.com/support.html. So you have your task readers: download the new version of BOLT, keep providing great feedback, and help make a nifty BlackBerry Browser even better.

BOLT BlackBerry Browser Feature updates

    1. APN configuration automated for BlackBerry devices. BOLT now auto-detects network details. This will eliminate the “internet not available” error messages, and manual APN configuration requirements, some BlackBerry users were experiencing.

    2. BlackBerry dedicated back key support. Also supported on some SE devices.

    3. BlackBerry scrolling enhancements. Scrolling on track ball BlackBerry devices is now faster and smoother.

    4. BlackBerry-specific enhancements to match BlackBerry system short cuts such as “.” when space is pressed in URL mode.

    5. System fonts will be utilized instead of Bitstream fonts for lists and options, resulting in increased usability.

    6. Improved server support, resulting in a more stable browsing experience.

    7. Automatic reconnect after client/server disconnect

    8. Usability enhancements for URL, Favorites and History entry and management.

    9. Instant switching between landscape and portrait modes (this formerly required a server round trip). This should also enhance user experience on accelerometer powered devices such as the BlackBerry Storm.

    10. Auto-Update. When a new release is available, BOLT will prompt users to download and install the new release directly from BOLT.

    11. Blackberry Specific Scrolling/navigation enhancements including space to page down one screen and space+shift to page up one screen, ‘t’ to jump to top of page, ‘b’ to jump to bottom.

    12. Double tap/double click as a shortcut to toggle between zoom out split screen mode, and full screen mode.

I have had the exact same issues. Download failed. Re-submit “join” request. Bolt sent me another set of download links to try. ALL of them failed. I then emailed support back and their response was “Please try the other links in the email. One of the versions should work on your device.”…despite having already said I tried that. BTW, I have the 8300 Curve (Verizon). Anyone having any LUCK with this BOLT Browser?! Would love to know how it looks.

Bolt Update V 0.83 I downloaded this update from the old V 0.73 for the 8330 Curve on Verizon and it works great except for You Tube which does not play and gives a java error. All the pages load just like you would view them on a PC not in a mobile view. Still playing with it. Still not happy with trackball movement but it is better than the first release.

The Browser is good for a few websites that you want to view full page, like Digg.com. These updates are severely needed.

Download Failed… I give up. I sent them an email and they said the download was expired and to request another one. I did that quite a few times. All of the downloads failed.

My first and second attempt both had download failed. I was copying the link and pasting it in my browser. My third attempt worked. I wrote the link down and typed it into my browser. I am still playing with it but I like the fact that it looked like an actual web page. I’m still playing with it and haven’t checked out youtube yet. So I guess that is where I’m going next.

scrolling around on my BB Curve 8330 is tedious and jerky. The biggest problem I have is the program will not let me access my menu. I have to back hit the back button just to be able to go to another page. Update: found out that the interface is buggy but you are able to scroll through the options (very, very difficult to see what you are doing though). The web pages render very fast in comparison to Opera and BB’s own browser. The embedded Java is a problem when you go to a site that uses it a lot (can’t see anything).

I have had so much trouble trying to keep from falling behind in a game I play online and this is the first browser that i have found that makes it possible for me to actually play and message people in the game. I am not too picky so I am very please that it works. I gotta say I love it.
