What’s wrong with YouMail?

YouMail Visual Voicemail Plus

Late last week YouMail launched Visual Voicemail Plus, a free visual voicemail application that works on the Blackberry Pearl, Curve, Bold and Storm. I like the sound of free, and a new visual voicemail application is always worth a try, but reports are surfacing that YouMail might not yet be up to snuff. Here’s what our main man Troy had to say over at BlackBerry News:

After 24 hours it is safe to say a lot work still needs to go into the application before it is ready for prime time much like the transcription service they charge for now. Many users including myself have experienced nothing but problems with the application… Maybe with all the ad revenue from placing ads on every aspect of your messages they can now put a little more money into their projects and refine their service. Time will tell.

We’re going to give YouMail our own thorough hands-on, but we recommend that you give it a try and post a comment on your experience. If you’re not willing to take the risk, however, post a comment and let us know of your favorite visual voicemail alternative.

Jason – see the message above. You need to enter the following to have YouMail substitute our voicemail for Verizon’s:

Dial *71 7142043114 and hit send.

Do not just dial 7142043114 – that just retrieves messages by phone.

I had the Tour and just upgraded to the Storm 2. There are a couple of issues with Youmail and the Storm2 I wanted to bring to your attention in hopes that i will get fixed soon as I am addicted to youmail. One app world only has version .95.6 and after installing it it updates to .95.9. How can we get the latest version? Also the bigger issue (and this might be fixed in the latest version) is when I set the sounds to be either handset or headset then handset, all of my phone and email notifications only play over the handset instead of the speaker. Once I uninstall Youmail my sounds are back to normal. This problem makes Youmail a no go since it makes it where I can not hear when I get a call or emails. Can you get this fixed? I paid for an annual subscription I know its not much but would really like to keep using Youmail. thanks

Just an update on the issue. I transfered the .96.2 YouMail app fro my Tour to Storm 2 and so far everything seems to working without any issues. Appworld just needs to be updated to make the latest version available for the Storm 2 instead of version .95.6. I will let you know if I see anything wrong with .96.2 and the Storm 2 but all is good now.

YouMail’s newest version is now set up for the 9550 in AppWorld. Thanks for highlighting that oversight to us.

Thanks, I have found an issue. I am not sure if its just with the Storm 2 or maybe 5.0 software. The problem is the audio settings affect the ringer tones. If you have the audio set to play handset or headset then handset the ringer tones will do the same. To recreate the issue. Set audio in YouMail to handset always or headset then handset. Play a youmail message. After you play a youmail message all of the ringer tones do the same thing as YouMail messages (in this case play over the handset speaker). I can do the reverse and set Youmail audio to Speaker Always or Headset then Speaker, Play a YouMail message and the ringer tones will then play over the Speaker.

    Unfortunately, that’s a known issue.

The way YouMail works is that we change the “audio path”, which is what’s used by everything (e.g., ringers, the media players, etc..). We don’t yet have a way to separate these out, but doing so is on our “figure this out” list.

I didn’t have this problem with my Tour and also a Friend with an Original storm does not have the issue either.

I just found out the issue. Another program was actually causing the problem. Like I said my Tour worked fine so I reloaded the Storm to to out of the box software and first loaded YouMail and it worked. started installing all applications one by one and it ended up being PatternLock that caused the problem as weird as it seems since it has nothing to do with sounds. It was also the only program I have on my Storm that I didn’t have on the tour. I am now back to being a Happy YouMail user. I was having withdrawals without my YouMail. I can live with out other applications.

@AlexQuilici, hi I just signed up for youmail last week. I have Sprint and a BB Tour. I love the app, but noticed two glitches. youmail fails to consistently capture missed calls. So I will have a missed call on my BB and then when I log into youmail there will be no record of it. Secondly, I noticed that I don’t always get the alerts/notifications that I selected. For example, I asked youmail to send me a text every time a call is Ditched and when the number calls me sometimes I receive a notification and sometimes I do not. Are these known issues? Is there a fix coming if so? I really like using this app and don’t want to have to go back to my Sprint voicemail.
    Thanks!!!!

    Hi Jett.

When you say “missed call”, I assume you’re talking about calls where the person heard all or part of the greeting, but didn’t leave a message. We by default send a text message for each of these, but they don’t appear in the Visual Voicemail client (though doing so is something we’re thinking about).

On the “Ditched Call” issue – can you send marketing AT youmail.com your account info (mobile number)? We’ll look into it, but we hadn’t heard of an issue there.

    Hi Alex,

Thanks for the quick reply. As for the missed call I am not referring to the app on my phone but the website when I log in at http://www.youmail.com. Normally I can see the last 5 missed calls, but I’ve had at least 3 occaisions where the missed call appeared on my BB call logs however the call did not appear in my missed calls on the website.

I’ll e-mail the marketing dept and see if they have any insight as well.

    Thanks again,
    Jett

    Hi,
I am excited to use this app. I have AT&T and BB Pearl. I have downloaded app, but continue to get the connection error message. I called AT&T and had them reset my APN. When I look at my APN settings through TCP, there is nothing there. Should I have something specific there? I am not using BB at work, so there is no issue there and I can access the internet fine. In fact, AT&T says that if I can access the internet, then my APN settings are correct.

    Please help.

Lance – please send your contact info to marketing@youmail.com. We have a separate test version of the client we can make available to you that provides more information about connection problems to make it easier to track down those issues.

    Alex,

I have been having a problem with the dropbox for over a month now. I forward my Google voice messages to the dropbox but they go straight to trash. I am an annual subsriber and have called and emailed the premium support and have not received a resolution to this problem in about a month. This problem started after I had to change my mobile phone number. Can you help get this escalated. As it stands now I am getting no better support than a free user.

    Thanks,

    Brian –

Please send an e-mail to marketing AT youmail.com with your contact info. You’ll get a call back right after that. I’m sorry if there was a delay with support – usually prosupport @ youmail.com gets responses back within an hour or so and they’ll help you solve the problem.

As for the YouMail Dropbox issue, we’ll need a bit more detail (what do you mean by go straight to trash?).

    Thanks.

    Hi!
Why are some Alltel / Verizon users getting the “Please enter your 10 digit number” when the callers who are not in their contact list call? Is there anything we can do to get Verizon to change this because according to the help section of your site – it is something on their end. It looks like they have allowed it in plenty of areas and not in others… I am in Raleigh, NC. Is there anything I can do?

I am using YouMail for my VOIP but cannot get it to work with Alltel / Verizon. I even opened a separate account with the cell separately to see if that would work to no avail. Thanks for any help you can offer!

PS: I am so impressed that the CEO is answering questions in this forum!

It’s really an Alltel/Verizon problem. When a call gets forwarded to YouMail, we need to have the wireless carrier provide “signaling” that includes the OCN (originally caller number). We use that number to map to your mailbox (the OCN is your number – the one people called – which is your account number at YouMail).

If the carrier doesn’t provide it, there’s nothing we can do at this point. And Alltel historically hasn’t provided it, and seems to be slowly providing it as they upgrade their telephone switches in their network to Verizon’s usual standards. We can’t tell where it works or doesn’t work until people forward calls to our platform.

    Alex,

I have been using Youmail on my Verizon BB Curve 8330 for almost a year now, and I'm a huge fan. I just upgraded to the latest release (2.0.0.1 i think), and I wanted to ask about a feature from the older version (.96 or something) that doesn't seem to have made it into this latest version. In the old version, the inbox list on my phone would have a red or green bar next to the message that would indicate whether or not the audio had already been downloaded. Has this been removed?

Also, not sure if it's just me, but it seems like it's harder to tell which messages are New vs Listened To, as the only indication is the bold lettering. I want to say that I recall this distinction in the older version being significantly more clear…

Would appreciate hearing back when you have a moment. Keep up the great work!!!
