What do you like or dislike about the Storm?

Engadget is asking readers what they think of the BlackBerry Storm, now that it has had time on the market and users have become familiar with the device. Personally, I found the BlackBerry Storm typing experience to be it’s biggest forte. Touchscreen typing is incredibly frustrating, but RIM built the Storm knowing that users needed to ‘feel’ the keys. The SureClick system, although not the most popular feature, I feel is fairly innovative and worth a kudos.

That being said, I think there is room for improvement. My list would include:

  • WiFi.
  • Multi-touch zoom would help the web browsing experience.
  • Faster swipe response.
  • What do you think? What are the major pros and cons for this device?

I went from loving it, to hating it, to loving it again and I doubt i’ll be turning back. The issue hasn’t been with the hardware itself but more the software. But RIM has been on the ball ever since they launched it, which left many of us owners, satisfied. The latest beta OS is a must download for anyone. Either way, owners should expect their carriers to have their official OS released soon. With that said here’s my list.

Hate the fact that there is…
      - No WiFi (can’t blame RIM for that apparently – looks at Verizon)
      - No multi-touch (can’t blame RIM for that apparently – looks at Apple)
      - No App Store yet (this should of been released at the same time as the Storm)

      Improvements…
      - OS (the obvious choice but they’re definitely improving)
      - Keyboard rate (it’s an OS issue but can get better)
      - Camera (needs software improvement – needs better processing)
      - More options (For exampple, I don’t always like clicking the screen, so give me the option to tap in order to open an application – much like the iPhone)
      - Memory! (this goes to all Blackberry’s – once that App Store hits the market, expect many to start crying about not fitting all 65 versions of Fart applications)

…at the moment, that’s all I can think of. But to be honest, most of the things I mentioned up top have already been greatly improved since its launch date. Which comes to show you how quickly RIM is responding. But being a normal human being, i’ll always ask for more, right? Obviously.

I think that the Storm is great in theory, bad in practice. I am running (STILL) .75, I don’t want to load a leaked version. Verizon is SLOW to release upgrades, definite drawback.

I am still seeing the thing slow to react, landscape then wait, oops then portrait! The little, middle of the bloody screen, timer while it thinks is going to drive me to drink. Verizon needs to move quickly on resolving these issues. Most of us will be done with our contract by then!

What’s up with the quirky camera functions! There should be a button to close all applications at once. Verizon is telling as excuse to close applications before getting out to main menu. WTF? Anybody has a solution to not eating memory like a hog?

Same for the keyboard. As above see below. I cannot type anything without taking forever b/c clicks/wrong letter or backspaces and delete the letter. Keyboard is just to small for that click function. Trying to click between a letter to correct a typo, forget it. It is easier to delete and start over.
Open a web page and just try to click on a specific box to open that page. Good luck with that.
Response is too slow. whirley clock or worse no response at all. I am afraid to download beta so will wait for Verizon to wake uo and send out this upgrade. Cannot wait for the improvements, It will be a great phone in time!

I have had my Storm since it was first available with Verizon. I am currently running the leaked .103 version of the OS and have very few complaints with the device. Camera lag could still be improved a bit and some days the battery drains faster, but I believe that has to do with the particular applications that I’ve been using. People need to realize that by taking some small steps on a daily basis they can keep their Storm running really efficiently. Just clearing the memory by utilizing the “memory clean” application on a daily basis has kept mine running really well. Verizon does need to do an official update for the OS soon though. Oh, and by the way, this response was posted with my Storm.

I love my Storm, it’s a great phone. I agree that Verizon seriously needs to get the next update out ASAP to fix the following:
      1. Portrait and Landscape switching is slow
      2. Camera needs a little love…inconsistent and slow.
      3. flipping between apps is a little slow.

an overall improvement in responsiveness is what we need.

For what do you all want a WiFi in your BB? You can get all the access with 3G?

For me the most most most important thing is, that I can setup and store and run applications from the sd-card. I have 16 to 64 GB space there, why ist the app.memory only about 40MB????

I love my storm. I hated it for the first two days but if your patient with it, you will begin to love as you learn how it works.

      What I hate:
      1. No wifi – 3G is no where near my FiOS. Why not go faster?
      2. Camera is not fast enough like my BB Pearl.
      3. Sluggishness when typing sometimes, especially in the browser. (typing this
      on my storm)
      4. Bugs bugs bugs. They are being fixed with each os but I’m still annoyed by the ones that still exist.
      5. LAG. I’m using leaked OS .103 which is super fast compared to .75 but is still slow compared to a typical berry.

      I like:
      1. Fast accelerometer in Leaked OS .103
      2. Camera takes high quality pictures when in good lighting like outside.
      3. Quality of images looks great.
      4. Love its multifunctionality. There is almost nothing you can’t do with the Storm. (iphone sucks in that respect)

I could type word documents. Powerpoint excel. Read pdf. Play music. Even over bluetooth. Its very flexible, it just needs to be more efficient.

i love and hate it at the same time! reading most of the comments on here, seems like all of yous are US user, im a UK user, i think we pretty much suffers from the same problems..i love the phones functionality, everything u can do, but everything is so so slow…sluggish…whatever u call it! i have the .78 OS which has improved from the original OS yet is still very slow at times especially the camera! the camera is so slow, all the moments passed by the time the picture is taken, and if you are trying to take a picture of a person, i seriously worry the person will suffer a facial cramp before the camera reacts!

really, everything needs to be speeded up, otherwise this must deemed a failure.

      PS
for yous whos using the leaked OS, would u know that if it will work on the UK one or is it the same? and where do u get a copy.

Good luck to us all. :)

Many many likes peak my interest, mostly that it is more than just OS 4.2 and it’s not a freakin Apple product. The ever increasing poor quality “i” products are really starting to piss me off something royally.

      2 negatives:

      1. Only available on Verizon. I’d rather let Hitler’s rotting corpse *@#! my mother than be on that network.

      2. Has a camera. I HATE the fact that everything is so freakin trendy now that they ALL have to have cameras, what happens to those of us that can’t have cameras because the US Federal Government says we can’t regardless of IT policies (that are honestly pretty simple to bypass)?

Hooray to RIM for screwing us over (those that actually NEED a BB without a camera and versatile network choices, and want something more than just an 8800 or older stone-aged, wheeled device), yet again!

When I saw the invite for a Storm Review I couldn`t help but be drawn in. I’ve had this phone for a month now and have alot of constructive feedback on it. However, after reeding other owners reviews, I feel there isn’t much more I could add in terms of a ‘review’.
To put it simply, Suretype is one of the strongest features on this phone for me; I would get incredibly frustrated while typing on other touch screen devices. The weakest feature, which encompases a number of things, is the OS the device shipped with. That being said, theres alot of room for improvement and it’s still very early in the life of this phone.

A few ideas I came across while using the device:
      - Needs to be faster (this is obvious, but specifically in terms of menu scrolling and swiping, response to incomning calls, overall touch screen response…)
-Tilt Sensor override, or whatever you call it, all I’m looking for is a way to force my BB to stay in portrait mode unless i’m in my messages (BBM, SMS, Email, …)
-Customization, and while were on that subject, why not a nicer looking looked screen while in landscape mode? Or have the default wallpaper swoosh over to a landscape mode, anything would be better then the current place holder….
-Mac support (without having to use Missing sync for Mac, which is excellent btw, it’s just unfortunate that you have to pay extra)
-UI updates and shortcuts (how about an option to ‘mark all messages read’… stuff like that)
-Simple intergration of Google maps into the Maps application
-And for the love of your god, could someone tell RIM that once I exceed the maximum number of characters in an SMS to automatically switch to a new message (2/2 sort of deal) I don’t understand why this feature wasn’t on my 8830 and still not on the storm. Not everyone I message has a BB (and therefore, no BBM) and if I have a lenghty-SMS(oxymoron?) to compose, I find myself saving my first message, creating a new one, typing, oh! no more room, save again, make a new one, repeat until message is done, and then send each one individually… Come on! get with the times!

All this to say that in the end, I’m not too worried about any of this; a new OS is likely to be released soon which, so I’ve heard, fixes a number of the speed issues. Also, with the eventual launch of the app store, I look forward to third party application allowing more control of both the system’s UI and it’s functions.

      Thats all for now,
      Cheers!

All this to say that in the end, I’m not too worried about any of this; a new OS is likely to be released soon which, so I’ve heard, fixes a number of the speed issues. Also, with the eventual launch of the app store, I look forward to third party application allowing more control of both the system’s UI and it’s functions.

      Thats all for now,
      Cheers!

NO Wifi? No Problem… When verizon adpots UMA like T-Mobile’s HotSpot@home service (where you can use WIFI as an extention of FULL wireless capabilites, including Voice, SMS/MMS, Data, and even BB Data), then I’ll want wifi. After all.. its a MOBILE DEVICE, how can I be mobile if tied to a wifi hotspot???

No multi-touch?? I can touch/hold and touch to select multiple messages in my message list… etc…

The Storm’s release software was no where close to where it needed to be.

With the leaked .103, the Storm is much improved. its where it should have been when released.

But I still say, those who felt this was anything more than a Blackberry that they replaced the tactile keyboard and track ball with a touch screen is going to be completely dissapointed.

As an employee at a major telecommunications company, I agree with all of the features you would want in the Storm. Unfortunately, until RIM does a remake of the sureclick system, this phone is a dud. It has amazing potential and is by far the best new technology out there. However, we are already seeing major data swaps because of the failing screens. This unit needs a major component re-do. At minimum, 1 out of 7 come back because the screen doesn’t “click” anymore. It is now evident, this early in, that retailers will experience major issues with the handset. My personal stand point on this phone is that it is an outstanding unit that has room for improvement, but was released to early to keep up with the Iphone. RIM should go back to the drawing boards with this one, as they are better than that and have a massive loyal following. That’s just one guys opinion, personal or professional.

I’ve taken some nice pics driving 75 on the highway.. I haven’t figured out how or if I can play videos.. I can’t use youtube..if I know I have a lengthy text I use mms instead of sms because it don’t max out.. If anyone could tell me how to use youtube I’d appreciate it and where can I upgrade my os..
