RIM issues security patch alongside Certicom buyout

Comments

RIM has issued a security patch for the BlackBerry. The update applies to the Application Web Loader and is related to Microsoft’s recent security updates to Internet Explorer 7. Apparently, the ActiveX component is vulnerable to a memory overflow error which, if exploited, could allow an attacker to remotely execute code on a targeted system. This patch has come in conjunction with the Certicom buyout and rounds out their security efforts quite nicely. Thanks RIM for making our BlackBerrys that much safer.

Telus Q4 profit down, revenue up

Comments

Telus posted their Q4 2008 financial results today, reporting a drop in profit, but growth in revenue. Telus’ Fourth-quarter earnings fell to C$285 million (US$231.7 million), or 89 Canadian cents a share, from C$400 million, or C$1.22 a share, a year earlier. Telus blamed the loss in profit on fewer tax-related gains and increased spending on restructuring. Telus recorded favorable tax-related adjustments of C$32 million, compared with C$143 million a year earlier. It also said restructuring costs increased by C$32 million.

On the positive side, revenue rose 5.3% to C$2.45 billion on growth in wireless revenue, as wireless subscribers spent more on text messaging and social networking. Telus stated that more subscribers were picking up feature-rich smartphones, like the BlackBerry, and using services like messaging and Facebook, which boosts data revenue.

Bell to launch BlackBerry Pearl Flip 8230 March 6th

Comments

Our fellow Canadian droogs over at MobileSyrup have uncovered a black and white image of some upcoming BlackBerrys on the Bell network. Ignore the ugly Palm device on the left and you will see Black and Pink versions of the BlackBerry Pearl Flip 8230. The image also displays a launch date of March 6th, but no pricing information. However, I think it’s reasonable to expect a ‘less-than-$100′ pricetag, or possibly even free, with a 3-year contract.

Nuclear weapons lab BlackBerry goes missing in Axis of Evil

Comments

A nuclear weapons lab in Los Alamos, New Mexico is reporting missing 69 computers and one of their scientists has lost his BlackBerry in a “sensitive country.” I’m pretty sure the word “sensitive” means one of those loose canon countries like North Korea and not sensitive as in “emotional”, which I guess would implicate France. The lab insists no breach of security has occurred and all important and classified data remains safe. I did my best to convey the low level of risk this poses us in the above picture.
