As we speak RIM is designing three new phones to replace the blackberry storm. The storm was nothing than a quick attempt for Verizon and RIM to make some money during the holiday and all bought into it. Eventually RIM and Verizon are going to phase out the blackberry storm in favor of new products. Wonder why the update is taking so so long? This will probably also be the last update. The OS the storm uses was basically shoehorned into a phone with a touch screen…the black berry storm can never compete with the iphone and palm pre because of hardware limitations. Those hardware limitations is: video acceleration…without video acceleration the phone will never have the silky feeling the the iphone and palm pre do. It’s as simple as that…the blackberry storm falls under the category of the “lesser” touch screen phones that don’t have hardware acceleration.

(supposedly…) The new update will be available on April 15, 2009!

    - So says a sales rep at a Verizon store in Atlanta.

And just where did that information come from? Rim and blackberry have never made a phone where not even 6 months later was pulled and instead something else offered. They are coming out with a another new one for verizon that wont be a touch screen, but how reliable is your source for you to make a statement such as that???

BB Storm 2 coming out around the end of the year already confirmed–and it will have a touch screen! Face it, we got suckered into buying the Storm 1 (including myself) as a product in beta form (if that!). They hyped it up by making only limited quantities available. You can’t tell me with a straight face that the Storm is a good phone–it’s a piece of junk and the iphone really is light years ahead of it, though it hurts for me to admit it (I don’t care much for apple). The palm pre will be hot hot hot! Hardware acceleration (just like a big computer) tells the tale, it’s what seperates the voyagers, dares, omnias, storms etc. from the iphone & palm pre. Give credit where credit is due and it’s certainly not dou to the Blackberry Storm. Goodbye.

One more thing: try putting a video criticizing the Blackberry Storm on Youtube and see what happens to it. Youtube = puppet

Thanks for the insight Gabe. But I am sure, as you know RIM and Blackberry is NO slouch company.. EVERYTHING that they have put out has been a great product.. Look at how buggy IPHONES were and STILL are..Software upgrades are going to make this a great phone.. RIM is not going to short change anyone on this phone…. Talk to a lot of people that own the IPHONE…. A lot of them are going to be supporters all the way to the end in spite of NOT being able to make calls on it, which is the primary reason for a phone.. Is it not? While the Iphone might be light yrs ahead, I would rather have a phone that will get better with in time, that you are at least able to do what a phone should do and that is MAKE calls with…. I have talked to sooooo many people that own Iphones and while it does have some nice features and all in all is a good phone, many of them have to be outside or in a good area to make or take a call without it being dropped, part of it is the network they are on, but Apple should stick to macs and Ipods and leave the phones to people who make stricktly phones and nothing else

Blackberry is a slouch company and they have released crappy product, the latest one being the Storm. All phones have bugs but the iphone is overall a better phone and better user experience. The numbers don’t lie my friend, even with the crappy att network consumers prefer the iphone over any other phone (it’s the best selling phone to date) and I doubt RIM / Verizon will ever sell half as many storms as iphones.

As far as you liking a phone that will improve? This is a joke! Look how much the iphone improved (im talking about the non 3G) and take a look at how much the Storm has improved (none). They haven’t even made a single update (when it does come out it will be lame). RIM is already coming out with storm 2 and the rest of us with storm 1 are screwed! Sure they won’t officially drop support but rest assured, you won’t see another update for a long long time, if ever.

Let me correct something: Blackberry wasn’t a slouch company but with the release of the storm it now is. Apple raised the bar when it released the iphone and not being a slouch meant meeting or exceeding that bar, RIM did neither. Lets see what the future has in store (pun intended).

I just wish RIM or Verizon or whoever would officially release the new software. I work for verizon and even I don’t know when the “official” version is being released!

So JOSH (above)…. Sorry for your mis-information from your rep. It’s possible that he has a better sources than I do, but I doubt it.

If it were true… you’d see a lot more people stammering about it considering it’s anticipation is driving every blackberry user crazy! (on verizon network at least)

    C’mon RIM/Verizon! Hurry up!

I think both of your arguing isn’t getting you anywhere. Both phones have great functions and options that the other doesn’t. Blackberry will not just leave the Storm owners in the dust because they are a very profitable company. Look at their financials… A company like this will not turn it’s back on all the people that did get the storm. It would be a horrible business decision. By not taking care of the customers that got the storm, it would definately cause people to not look at another blackberry device, which this company wont let happen, sorry. Anyways, just be patient, the new software is coming.

Let me just put my 2 cents in. Gabe, you say the Iphone is better. And in your OPIONION it just may be. But the thing is, apple has had 4 years or better to make the iphone what it is today. And yes it is a very sleek phone and i enjoy playing with one when the oprotunity presents itself. But i own a storm and, for me, the storm is the better investment. It really just depends on what you like and enjoy in an OS on a cell phone. Basically its like arguing with an apple user that windows is better. dont get me wrong i love my ipod and apple does make good stuff. But i would quickly choose windows based products over mac. Its the same with the phones. In fact, a good friend of mine is about as close minded as you are with the iphone. So we had a little competition going. I told him that i bet my storm could do anything that his iphone could do…and guess what. all except for some little zippo lighter app our phones did the same thing. you can go back and forth about whats better but the fact is they are both great phones in their own way and they are BOTH pieces of trash in there own way. You cant take your opionin and force it on other people just because you like iphones better than the storm. But going back to what DAVID said…at least i can make calls on my phone wherever and whenever i choose too. i dont think there are too many iphone users out there that can say that…yourself included.

    @LC,

LC, you are a wishful pretender, I don’t own an iphone, I own the blackberry storm and will be the first one to tell you that it is a piece of crap. I bet MAC is going to come up with their iphone 3.0 update before rim comes up with one for the storm. You can’t say with a straight face that the Storm even comes close to the iphone or palm pre as the latter two are on a totally different level hardware wise and software. Even the first generation iphone is better than the crapberry shitstorm.

What??? Anyone who has played on an iPhone for 2 minutes knows that its interface kicks Storm’s butt completely. But hey, if you want to make calls routinely, clearly, without drops and noise, you *must* shy away from ATT until they build it out.

Verizon is awful… Every other vendor of this phone has released updates or ships with a newer firmware release. What’s up Verizon. Are you worried about the bad PR that happened with the first release? Being labeled as a vendor of vaporware may be worse!

It is buggy and slow!! Storm doesn’t respond well and reboot by itself. I would definitely not recommend this to anyone. RIM is not specialized in making touch screen device, this is a total failure. Oh, did I mention that the batter would only last for a day even in CDMA only mode?
