BlackBerry and mobile device charging while traveling solution

I have recently found a good solution for a BlackBerry USB charging that I’d like to share with the community. A while back I purchased a Belkin Mini Surge Protector with USB Charger and I’m very satisfied with my purchase.

The Belkin Mini Surge Protector with USB Charger is a small, 3 outlet surge protector with 2 USB ports on one end. It plugs into any standard North American wall socket, and gives you 2 additional outlets (a total of 4 instead of 2), and 2 powered USB ports. More succinctly, it’s awesome.

BlackBerry Curve 8900 OS 4.6.1.199 leaked

Comments

blackberry OS

Kevin from CB has posted a new OS leak for the Curve 8900. As usual, this is a leak and not an official OS. Don’t download this if you are not a pro user who understands OS upgrades and downgrades. I haven’t installed this personally and I really can’t guarantee that it won’t blow up your BlackBerry.

Download OS 4.6.1.199 for the BlackBerry Curve 8900, here.

RIM updates BlackBerry Internet Service (BIS) to 2.6

A diagram of BIS operation

North American BlackBerry users can rejoice because RIM has upgraded BIS to 2.6. Although BIS is obviously not the enterprise powerhouse that BES provides, it will give you a quick look at what life is like on the other side. Something to note about the information regarding Gmail and BIS: if you’re going to take advantage of IMAP Gmail, you have to delete your account and re-add it from within your BIS admin.

With the new updates, you can expect the following:

Display of password characters
o BlackBerry smartphone users have the option to display password characters when configuring email addresses with the BlackBerry Internet Service. This feature makes it easier for BlackBerry smartphone users to integrate third-party email addresses, especially when using a BlackBerry smartphone with the SureType® input method.

Improved descriptive support and error messages
o BlackBerry smartphone users that have integrated a third-party email account using Post Office Protocol (POP) receive a personal identification number (PIN) message that includes instructions on how to leave email messages on the messaging server for successful delivery to the BlackBerry smartphone.

Option to change signatures from the BlackBerry smartphone
o BlackBerry smartphone users that use Wireless Application Protocol (WAP) automatic login can change the signatures for email messages using the BlackBerry smartphone.

Improved language support
o Dutch is now an available language for the BlackBerry Internet Service 2.6.

Gmail integration using IMAP
o BlackBerry Internet Service 2.6 uses Internet Message Access Protocol (IMAP) to integrate Gmail® webmail accounts.
This integration protocol introduces the following benefits:

  • Elimination of sent email messages appearing as received email messages in the message list on the BlackBerry smartphone
  • One-way synchronization of read status, sent items, and deleted items.
  • o To use these improvements, BlackBerry smartphone users must remove and reintegrate their Gmail webmail accounts.

Yatca Twitter app for BlackBerry updated – supports replies

    Comments

    yatca

Bla1ze does a great job of staying on top of app updates. Today, we got tipped off about an update to Yatca (Yet Another Twitter Client App). The latest version, 1.2.1, has a fairly lengthy list of changes so you may want to try it out even if you weren’t totally happy with the last version.

Get the latest version of Yatca here.

The changelog for Yatca is as follows, Storms owners ensure you read the last one:

    * In many corporate environments, BES is used only to provide e-mail delivery, and Internet access is provided using BIS or the carrier network. Yatca can now support this scenario thanks to a new setting on the Options screen. By default Yatca will continue to connect to Twitter through the BES and only users who experience connection problems should change this setting.
    * Curve 8900 users should now be able to take and upload photos!
    * Users on all devices should notice an improvement in the quality of uploaded photos.
    * In previous versions, Yatca would always refresh the timeline on starting, even if the auto-refresh setting was ‘None’. This has now been fixed.
    * Some of the commands have been renamed to be more meaningful, e.g. the ‘Yatca Update Status’ command is now the ‘Update Twitter Status’ command.
    * In response to a very common request, the ‘Update Twitter Status’ command is now available from all the system applications. So it is no longer necessary to open the Messages application to tweet!
    * Feedback from Storm users suggests that Yatca works better on the Storm when compatibility mode is disabled. So I have added a couple of attributes to the OTA download file to force the Storm to run Yatca in this way. N.B. These attributes are only detected if you uninstall the previous version of Yatca and then do a clean install of the new version – upgrading will not suffice.

NUForce NE-7M headset for the BlackBerry Storm

    Comments

    NuForce

I was in the market for a wired in-ear headset. I tried a couple off the shelf of a local wireless store, but none them lived up to my standard for listening to music. I ordered the NU Force NE-7M wired headset, based on a suggestion from a colleague. So far, these are great little mid priced ear buds. Call quality isn’t too shabby either.

I’ve got the Blackberry Storm, which came with the generic headset. The ear buds on those never fit in my ears and on long train rides they tend to fall out or don’t block out enough noise. The NE-7M’s do a great job of staying in my ears and blocking out the background noise at even low levels, when you pause the music you can hold a conversation. The mic has a pause button, which comes in handy when people walk up and want to talk to you. There are no buttons on the headset to skip music; I use my side buttons for that.
