Research in Motion still hiring despite economic slowdown

RIM jobs

Although many companies are laying off their employees, RIM is still going strong and hiring all the right talent. RIM is still looking to fill hundreds of positions.

The BlackBerry maker said it plans to make about 600 new hires in order to support its growing portfolio of BlackBerry products. The company is looking to bolster its 12,000-member-strong workforce with new engineers, salespeople, and software developers, executives said.

“We’ve built this business on some really spectacular talent and some great chemistry,” co-CEO Mike Lazaridis said in an interview with Bloomberg. “We’re not about to let that down.”

Many of these hires will come from the competition, serving to both boost RIM’s human capital, as well as take talent away from rivals.

RIM has been able to avoid the downturn so far, and it posted a strong fourth quarter thanks to handsets like the BlackBerry Storm. Smartphone sales are expected to defy the sluggishness in the overall mobile market, and RIM said its push architecture will be a key differentiator from its rivals.

BlackBerry OS 5.0 details roundup

BlackBerry OS 5

WES 2009 is only 2 weeks away and we’re expecting the launch of the BlackBerry OS 5 in the near future. BGR has put together a nice roundup of information that we know pertaining to OS 5, so why not take an advanced look at what to expect.

Messages

With BlackBerry OS 5, when scrolling through a long list of emails, the date header will remain stationary thus making it impossible to lose track of which days emails your looking at. This feature is great for anyone who may leave their BlackBerry to accumulate emails for a long time.

When sending photos, OS 5 will give an option to resize individual photos to 1024×768, 800×600 or 640×480 is given. This will save space and reduce data transmisssion costs.

Other changes to the message system include the ability to flag emails and define them by request, color, status and due date as well as create, edit and delete folders from the device itself.

Calendar

Calendar entries will be able to be forwarded, and users will also finally be able to view attachments that are attached to calendar invites. Conference call information can also be plugged into Calendar, which means you can get plugged directly into the call from the notification.

Browser

We already mentioned that Google Gears will be supported in OS 5.0, but now we’re told that videos will be able to be streamed inline within the browser itself. A bunch of new AJAX formats are also supported.

Maps

RIM has updated the Maps application to render around two times as fast as they did in the past. In addition to this, scrolling around and zooming in should no longer result in lagging.

Built into the message system, addresses will be automatically sniffed out by the OS and a simple click will bring up the location in Maps. This feature will likely only work in the US and Canada at first.

The BlackBerry Maps app has also been updated to include almost every city. This is great considering geotagging will be available with pictures so you can show all your friends that trip to rural America.

General Notes

Here is a quick breakdown of more features you will see with OS 5:

  • Users will be able to set their default download folder, wallpaper, theme and reset the icon layout of a theme to its default layout from “Homescreen Preferences”
  • Holding the Menu key will bring up Application Switcher as it currently does on the Storm/newer Bold OS builds/etc
  • When an item is highlighted in a menu setting, hitting the Menu key will select it as it currently does on the Storm
  • If the device is running low on memory, a message will pop up that not only informs the user of the low memory buy also recommends rarely used apps for deletion
  • Users can decide if they want to have sounds when the device is booting up, shutting off, plugged in to charge, unplugged from charging, when the battery is full and when the battery is kaput
  • Users can now individually encrypt email PIN messages. All that is needed is for the sender and receiver to know the encryption password which is done via S/MIME
  • Storm users will be able to get the full-QWERTY keyboard in portrait mode.

We’re looking forward to the official announcement and hopefully this keeps you informed until then.

liquid machines gateway

Liquid Machines, is a company dealing in Enterprise Rights Management (ERM) solutions, and they have unveiled a major release of its Liquid Machines Gateway for the BlackBerry Enterprise Solution. The Liquid Machines Gateway adds advanced features that allow persistent protection of attachments saved in more than 400 different file formats. In this release, Liquid Machines has also added support for the latest BlackBerry devices.

Mobile access to real-time communications and data can increase the risk of a loss of confidential enterprise information such as intellectual property and other trade secrets. To help solve this problem, the Liquid Machines Gateway extends Microsoft AD RMS information protection to a BlackBerry in conjunction with the BlackBerry Enterprise Server, enabling customers to persistently protect emails and attachments with encryption and usage controls that travel with the data. This persistent protection ensures that mobile communications, which may include executive and board communications, customer data, intellectual property and human resources information, can only be viewed by authorized users.

Free hotel reservation app available on BlackBerry App World

    2009-04-hrs-bb-app-4jpg

HRS.com, a European online hotel reservation portal, have announced the launch of a free application for BlackBerry that makes the hotel booking process easier than ever before. Business travellers will be able to search for and book rooms at over 230,000 hotels worldwide using the HRS.com application on their BlackBerry. The HRS.com application is now available for download on BlackBerry App World.

The HRS.com application provides business travellers with a simple way to find and book a suitable hotel whilst travelling, without the need to enter large amounts of information. Thanks to the GPS capabilities of BlackBerry smartphones (many models have GPS built-in), accommodations can be booked based on a user’s current location or the application’s Organizer function. When searching and booking hotels via the Organizer, users can also choose whether to use the address of one of the contacts in their address book or the venue of an appointment noted in their calendar. The booking confirmation can then be sent by either e-mail or SMS.

Alternatively, business travellers can use the GPS function to pull up a list of available accommodations on arrival at any new destination worldwide. Once the booking has been made, traveller’s can transfer the hotel information directly into their calendar or address book or display it on a Google map.

Check it out in App World and let me know what you think.

A man dubbed the Craigslist killer was found when police investigators used “high-tech leads” and traced “IP addresses to physical locations.”His BlackBerry, which he used constantly, was monitored without him knowing about it. As shown in the photo, his whereabouts can be combined with CCTV cameras to pinpoint his travel route.

The story is reminiscent of the lady who used Google latitude to capture someone who stole her purse.
