A little while ago, we wrote about a proposed bill by MP Marlene Jennings regarding forcing smartphone manufacturers to allow their devices to be infiltrated by police and government. BlackBerry Cool wrote about the article in the hopes of shedding light on the fact that decreasing security measures on these devices could have a negative impact on their ability to sell to high end enterprise and government clients that require a great deal of device security. Marlene Jennings replied to our concerns.

Free GPS app trials avaiable on App World from Trimble Outdoors

Comments

blackberry-trimble

With the launch of BlackBerry App World, BlackBerry users can download a free trial of three great GPS apps from Trimble Outdoors:

AllSport GPS makes it easy to keep track of your fitness regimen. A virtual personal trainer, AllSport GPS tracks your performance on runs, hikes and bike rides, and uploads it to a personal training log online (check it out in the Health & Wellness category)

Geocaching is a high-tech treasure hunt you can do anywhere. Geocache Navigator is the first application to bring geocaching to mobile phones, making it easy and to find hidden treasures no matter where you are, without any advance planning or additional equipment (see it in the Maps & Navigation category)

The Trimble Outdoors application is ideal for planning hikes and camping trips. Complete with maps and GPS navigation, it makes sure there’s one less thing to pack for a trip (try it from the Maps & Navigation category).

SugarSync is now available for BlackBerry and you can try the free BETA trial now. Currently, they only support BlackBerry software version 4.2 and newer.

To get the application and your free trial, go here.

SugarSync for Blackberry features:

1. Remote file access and editing: Retrieve, edit and upload files stored on other computers and the Internet (including Microsoft Office docs, music, videos, and more). Note: May require a Blackberry document editor.*
2. On-demand synchronization: SugarSync will detect any file changes and present the opportunity to upload revisions back to the cloud (and to multiple synced computers).
3. Shared Folders: Send files and folders (large and small) to anyone via an email sent directly from the Blackberry, and collaborate on projects through a Web-based Shared Folder (which can sync back to the Blackberry).
4. Powerful Photo Features: Easy browsing with a thumbnail wall display of photo albums, enjoy detail with high resolution photo viewing, and directly upload and sync photos taken with the integrated Blackberry camera.

*Note: Mobile file editing is currently limited to certain file types. Supported files may require a separate document editor shipping only on newer versions of the Blackberry devices.

FunMobility has an app called America’s Best Mobile Pix (APIX), a mobile photo community application currently being offered as a downloadable feature on Blackberry. America’s Best Mobile Pix will now easily integrate into Blackberry address libraries so users can easily access location information and share photos with friends.

The total number of APIX users has surpassed 2.25m with the total number of photos submitted eclipsing 1.5m. In all over 475m (or nearly half a billion) votes have been cast into contests such as Hottest Girl, Hottest Guy, Cutest Baby, Best Pet, Coolest Ride, and Funniest Pix, which lets users take photos using their camera phone, share the content with others, and then submit them for a chance to win real cash and prizes.

Apps and details surrounding RIM’s App World

RIM App World

Now that App World is live, let’s take a look at what is featured in the App World client and what you can expect from it. Before we begin, make sure you have a PayPal account, OS 4.2 or higher and a trackball or SurePress touch screen (aka Storm) BlackBerry before proceeding.

Remember, to download the App World client, go here with your BlackBerry browser..

The homescreen in App World begins with “Featured Items” which can be navigated to buy some of the best content for BlackBerry according to RIM. Okay, it may not be the absolute best, and here at BBCool we’ve seen some great apps, but they are sweet nonetheless. For example, the list includes:

Viigo for BlackBerry – Free
Yahoo Messenger – Free
Facebook – Free
Bloomberg – Free
Texas Hold’em King 3 – $5.99
MySpace – Free
AOL Instant Messenger – Free
Brain Challenge 2: Stress Management – $4.99
New York Times Crosswords – Classics Vol 1 – $4.99
Google Talk – Free
ICQ – Free

I think we can all agree that it’s a decent list of apps to start off with before going through the rest of App World.

When you do decide to keep browsing, you have a plethora of options. You can browse by categories that include Games, Music and Video, or Personal Health and Wellness.

Downloading an App is very simple, the payment system is the only downside. RIM partnered with PayPal rather than implement their own payment structure which could have sped up the whole process. Instead, when you click on an app, you are presented with Download, Reviews or Screenshots. If you’re going to purchase the app, you must sign in to PayPal.
