What to do if your BlackBerry gets water damage

BlackBerry Curve

If your BlackBerry gets covered in water, don’t worry. It’s not the end of the world and if you act fast and rationally, you can save your device.

    1. Pull out the battery.
    2. Put your device near sunlight.
    3. Rotate your device so all sides get sunlight.
    4. Leave it near sunlight for 24 hours. Some suggest in a bowl of uncooked rice or with silica gel packs.
    5. Do NOT put your battery back until the 24 hours are up.
    6. After 24 hours, put the battery back in and power on.

After following these steps, your BlackBerry should be just fine. If it doesn’t work, don’t bother trying to scam a new one from RIM. RIM has some really incredible CSI techniques to determine what exactly has happened to your BlackBerry and will know if you’re lying.

I’ve heard about RIM using some advanced testing methods to determine that a user, when asked whether he spilled anything on his device, was in fact lying and had spilled Diet Coke. The testing techniques were so sophisticated that they actually knew it was Diet in particular.

I dropped mine in a sink full of water. Of course it would not do anything. I took it apart and used my hairdryer to dry out the inside. Works great.

my son left his blackberry out in the rain in a heavy downpour and when we eventually realised we tried to power it on and it wasnt having it (just blank screen)- nightmare no more bbm’s! After reading all the comments we tried the rice thing overnight not totally believing it would work…….it was major relief for us all when in the morning the phone powered up and is now right as rain again!! (we left it in the rice for the rest of the day just in case, but its back to normal- perfect!)

I had my blackberry bold in a bag with my water bottle for soccer, and after i took a sip, i didn’t put the cap on right so it spilled in my bad and my bold didnt turn on my but the picture flash remained on… I took out the battery and let it dry but every time i put the battery back in the flash turns on and i can’t turn on the actual phone… 3 days later, rice didnt work, letting it to air out on my counter didnt work… what do i do!!? I miss my baby

  • Freaked out!!!!

Oh thank God mine just took a ride in the toilet. I was an idiot and tried it again with the battery in. Good news it did turn on then. Do you think it will still work? I got it in a bag of rice sitting in the window. Freaking here!!!!

  • hol.xx

my phone has done exactley the same..ive put it in a bowl of uncooked rice and going to leave it for 48hours

  • Common Sense

RIM does not have any ‘advanced testing methods’ to determine that a user, when asked whether he spilled anything on his device. There is a small strip of paper which you will see once you open the back of the phone. It turns red in case of any liquid. Thats it :)

  • Taz-rengifo

I also dropped it in salt water! But after 2 days in a tub of rice it works!
only the square sensor wont work..
Any ideas on fixing the sensor?

  • Julie_maupin

what a bunch of baloney! This must have been written by RIM! My daughters curve started freezing up off and on for about 2 months! Sent it in and they said water damage because that little red square is red! That little red square was colored with a red marker-the rep said that wasnt possible cause the type of paper that’s used marker wouldnt stick to! Well the little square is now black, cause marker does stick to it! We video taped this and we’re gonna put it on You-tube! & we’re gonna send the phone to a crime lab to analyze the little square, cause we’re all interested.  What a load of crap! HONOR THE WARRANTY!!!! That was all we asked!

I Have A Bb Curve, And It Fell In The Bath, I Immediatly Took It Out. I Took Out The Battery, Sim And Mini Sd, And Tissues It Down. I Left It In The Airing Cupboard For 3 Hours. And Assembled It, It Turned On But Many Keys Glitched. So I Put it back in the airing cupboard over night. I tried it this morning, Perfectly normal. But I looked at the white strip, and a third of it is pink. Is it worth taking it to a shop to be checked over? Or is all they can do tell me its got wet? Thankyou For The Help.xx

  • Katieford54

its been about 2 days since i dropped it in the bath and it was fine but then the next day i woke up and it wouldnt turn on so i took everything out of the device and it turned on but then later that day the screen went white and it wuldnt turn on. so i removed the battery for one night and it still wil not work. but i turned it on this morning the white screen came bak but you could see the reboot sign thingy when you turn it on and then it switched itself off can i fix it?

My phone broke on monday, i managed to fix it yesterday then i took it to school today and it broke again!! I’ve had shit weather for the past 2 weeks which includes rain but there’s no signs of liquid damage and no one has kicked it so what could have happened? still works, no real problems but the trackpad and keyboard hardly ever respond

    Blackberrys are just a liability
