How to develop and market a 3rd party BlackBerry app

As a BlackBerry developer, I have my own ideas about what makes a great BlackBerry application. I took the time to develop a list of concepts that I believe are important in the development process.

1. The User Interface (UI)

It’s vital to choose an appealing and not too over-done and crowded user interface. For the user it is essential to know from only looking at the interface what he has to do and how he sets the options in the application. Give your fields, check boxes and radio buttons appropriate titles or subjects. Short, descriptive words are a must.

I have already seen some utility apps where the UI is awfully crowded in the main screen. You look at all the options and feel like de-installing it because you will never know what all those buttons and checkbox do. Match similar options and put them into a separate screen with an appropriate title. Think about the novice BlackBerry-user, they don’t know all those settings and what they will do when you select them.

Even though I talked about an appealing and nicely looking UI, you cannot compare the iPhone user interface of applications to the rather sober-looking interface of BlackBerry apps. The BlackBerry OS is not aimed at fancy looking UI-Applications; it keeps the business factor. Personally, I love it!

RIM continues expansion – building data center in Atlanta area

Comment

RIM jobs

RIM is hiring around 200 new employees in the Atlanta area, according to the Atlanta Business Chronicle. The company will be opening a new data center, expected to be one of the largest of its type in the region. The building site is a 40-acre plot near the North Point Mall in Alpharetta.

We just recently contracted out our BlackBerry job boards, so expect to see some great opportunities in the BlackBerry space soon.

Instant Message clients

AOL Instant Messenger, Yahoo Chat, Google Talk and MSN Messenger have all been updated and are ready for download. The applications have gone from version 2.1.44 to 2.1.45. I can’t find any documentation about added features or bug fixes so if you find any, be sure to comment.

One potential update includes the ability to link MSN Messenger contacts to contacts in your BlackBerry address book.

What to do if your BlackBerry gets water damage

BlackBerry Curve

If your BlackBerry gets covered in water, don’t worry. It’s not the end of the world and if you act fast and rationally, you can save your device.

    1. Pull out the battery.
    2. Put your device near sunlight.
    3. Rotate your device so all sides get sunlight.
    4. Leave it near sunlight for 24 hours. Some suggest in a bowl of uncooked rice or with silica gel packs.
    5. Do NOT put your battery back until the 24 hours are up.
    6. After 24 hours, put the battery back in and power on.

After following these steps, your BlackBerry should be just fine. If it doesn’t work, don’t bother trying to scam a new one from RIM. RIM has some really incredible CSI techniques to determine what exactly has happened to your BlackBerry and will know if you’re lying.

I’ve heard about RIM using some advanced testing methods to determine that a user, when asked whether he spilled anything on his device, was in fact lying and had spilled Diet Coke. The testing techniques were so sophisticated that they actually knew it was Diet in particular.
