This service isn’t necessarily new, but we’ve been posting a lot about GPS apps for BlackBerry and BlipPlus is a free app you might find fun. With BlipPlus, you can share your location with others using BlipPlus or friends can create free BlackLine account on the web.

BlipPlus allows users to choose the frequency of locations published to BlackLine’s Location Services Platform. Users may choose to have their location updated as frequently as every 15 minutes through to every two hours. At any time, a user may disable location publishing or change friend permissions from within the BlipPlus application.

To summarize, it’s like Google Latitude except with more functionality.

BlipPlus incorporates a new Event Publishing feature that allows users to geo-tag and share photos to others. Users can publish photos taken with their phone’s camera and share them to others along with a subject and comment. Friends receive an Event Notification when a new event is published and can view the photo, subject, note, and location online or from within BlipPlus.

Town councillors raise their tech budgets for BlackBerry

Comments

Comox Valley

Comox, a small town in BC, Canada, is going to see their bureaucrats get their hands on some nice new BlackBerry devices. The reason being that they are about to vote on a budget that will give themselves a monthly $100 raise to cover the costs of technology, such as new BlackBerry devices.

Although the government is split on the idea of the budget, one councillor, Tom Grant, is definitely going to be spending that money on a new 8900 or better.

“I don’t need the $100 but with my own money I went out and bought a Blackberry two weeks ago and it has changed my life,” he said.

Verizon drops OS .141 – next update may come with OS 5.0

The Verizon BlackBerry Storm OS .141 update that we saw last month has been dropped. Apparently, the OS software has failed Verizon Wireless’ quality assurance tests. It’s not obvious how RIM or Verizon will proceed, but they’re going to have to do something fast because BlackBerry Storm owners are still several updates away form having a smooth functioning device.

We may not see another update until the Storm goes OS 5.0, which means you’ll have to be incredibly patient. At that time, we’ll likely see the BlackBerry Storm 2, which will be what you hoped the Storm was in the first place. It’s a steep price to pay to be an early adopter.

BlackBerry Onyx 96XX leaked online

CB has posted leaked pictures of the BlackBerry Onyx (or “Driftwood”) that appeared on the forums. It’s being said that the device will be a part of the 96xx series and will launch some time September on T-Mobile.

From the looks of the device, it is an 8900, mixed with a bit of BlackBerry Bold. Overall, it looks like it will be the 8900 on 3G, which is great because EDGE just doesn’t cut it these days. Also, considering T-Mobile’s 3G network went live just this month, it would make sense for them to have a slick new BlackBerry to try it out with.

Here’s the alleged spec list:

* GSM/GPRS/EDGE/UMTS device
* GPS
* Camera
* Wi-Fi (no UMA support)
* QWERTY keyboard
* 480×360 resolution screen

Since the launch date is predicted for the fall, we may see this device launch at CTIA Wireless IT and Entertainment in the fall. WES 2009 was all about enterprise, and it’s clear that RIM is choosing a new strategy for device launches. It could be that they’re avoiding conferences all together now, and leaving device launches up to the carrier.
