What to expect from App World 3.0 in 2010

Comments

blackberry app world

Before App World, we had App Center, the carrier portal that was both hidden and filled with boring content. Think of App Center as App World 1.0 and App World being in version 2.0. Next year (just a guess), we’ll be seeing App World 3.0.

Currently, App World is a consumer centric BlackBerry content portal that represents a shift in RIM’s customer base from totally enterprise, to a 50/50 split with consumers. The next evolution for BlackBerry App World, involves addressing their original customer base – enterprise.

In order for enterprise to get an app on their employees’ BlackBerry devices, a BES administrator as well as a large degree of support is needed to install the apps on each device. For small to medium sized businesses, this process is a little easier due to there being fewer devices. App World 3.0 is going to be able to roll out software across entire organizations from small to large. It’s not obvious how App World 3.0 will look, but it could go several ways.

App World could have two separate versions: one for enterprise and one for consumer. Another possibility is that every BlackBerry device will have the same App World, but organizations will be given the API’s and access, allowing them to push products to specific accounts. Not only will this result in savings for implementation, but it will allow enterprise users the ability to try a product before committing to a full-scale rollout.

A typical case that comes to mind involves the rolling out of encryption software for a large government organization. Before, all devices would have to pass through a BES administrator, the IT department and a team of support people. With App World 3.0, this organization will be able to push the software directly to everyone in the organization’s BlackBerry, without the need for their input. We’re currently seeing companies like Zenprise and Boxtone take over this sort of device management, and RIM will be eating their lunch in the coming years.

The above article has nothing to do with RIM and does not contain anything official. It is merely my own interpretation of the evolution of the App World platform. Everything you’ve read is not even rumor, it’s just an opinion piece.

The Best of WES 2009 roundup – what’s your favorite?

At WES 2009, I did my best to walk around the showroom floor and vPost the highlights from the show. WES has become an enterprise centric show and WES 2010 will likely be the same. Personally, I’m hoping RIM will start a new conference with a consumer theme, but they’ll likely save the consumer news for CTIA 2010.

I’ve taken the time to repost the Best of WES 2009 on BlackBerry Cool so you can review the entries and vote. We’re voting on the following categories:

1) Best consumer app
2) Best enterprise app
3) Overall favorite application at the show

BlackBerry App World community review system flaw

I have been in the mobile space for some time and back when I used to follow mobile gaming really closely, companies would keep a close eye on their ratings on various forums. A rumor was circulating about a particular company that would have its QA team rate all their latest releases perfectly, while rating the competition poorly. Shortly afterwards, the cheating company would see its games rise to the top, while the competition would fall several points.

This is a perfect example of how community review systems are flawed and open to manipulation. Now, it’s not clear whether this sort of cheating is happening on App World right now, but it’s obviously possible.

One way to solve this problem, is to use a system similar to Yelp. Yelp is a community review system where, after a user has written many reviews, and proven that they are reliable, their reviews become more trusted. These users become part of the Yelp Elite Squad. In order to improve the App World review experience, we need an App World Elite. By doing this, we’ll know that reviews are trustworthy, and not just a marketing ploy to skew the reviews.

The mobile social network GyPSii, has launched a service called CONNECT, which allows users to automatically update and share their status across Twitter and Facebook as well as its own network. The social network supports BlackBerry, meaning you can update your accounts directly from your device.

The cornerstone of this social network is its PlaceMe feature. The feature lets users record a moment or an experience using photos or videos, geotag it and share it with others by publishing it on GyPSii or Facebook and also sending it as a Twitter message.
