blackberry security

Lopez Research (Maribel Lopez, formerly of Forrester Research) published a May 2009 report entitled Successful Mobile Deployments Require Robust Security. The report takes a look at the three levels of protection provided by a comprehensive mobile security solution in preventing unauthorized access to:

1) the device and its data,
2) data as it transits the network and
3) the corporate network.

The results of the study concluded what we already know to be true: RIM was highly rated using these criteria. The BlackBerry Enterprise Solution received a 4/4 in all categories, including overall mobile security. Lopez Research concludes that “RIM offers the most robust security solution.”

There are several ways for the average BlackBerry user to experience an application. They can either download the app from a store or App World, get the application through their carrier, use the application if it comes preloaded or experience it as part of the BlackBerry OS.

It is rare that RIM will purchase a company to include it on the OS, but it’s a great way for everyone to enjoy an improved BlackBerry experience. Some technologies acquired by RIM include: the browser is purchased IP from various companies, BlackBerry maps is from Tele Atlas and the media player uses technology licensed from Roxio.

I have compiled a list of 10 apps that provide additional functionality to the BlackBerry and that I think all BlackBerry devices should come with.

vPost update

vPost has been working hard at updating their product for both consumer and enterprise. The foundations of this application are very robust and the potential for it includes almost every industry, which is why the app has gone through so many updates. As the app evolves to provide consumers with new features and better functionality, the number of enterprise uses grows.

The most recent update to vPost, which is called version 2.2 tentatively, includes the ability to use your vPost app as an “email messenger.” The application lets you add a list of contacts to the app, where you can share a variety of rich media with the user in a few simple clicks.

What’s new in the next version of vPost:

  • Unlimited favorites (add pictures to contacts then from address book hit menu -> ‘vpost favourite’). This is the feature that can turn vPost into an ‘email messenger.’
  • The ability to move around and delete widgets.
  • Take screenshots. Once vPost is launched, an option to take ‘vPost screenshot’ will show up in the menu.
  • Full thumbnail view mode for attaching existing media.
  • Scribble mode. This will enable users to mark-up pictures with text, lines, and objects.
  • Restaurant review widget. Prepare your post and use this new widget to easily rate and review your dining experience.

Disclaimer: Some of these features may not be in the next vPost as this is an advanced preview but hopefully they all make it in.
