This article is not true, The Nimbuzz app for BB does not allow voip calling. It only allows chat.

Voip calling without Wifi or 3g – then the best thing to use is Rebtel. It uses ur local airtime only & the prices are comparitively cheaper. I am using it for many months now & i have no discomfort

Even though this thread is quite old here is BlackBerry (pure) VoIP client form fgmicrotec called fgVoIP. It can be used with any SIP capable VoIP provider including your own Asterisk/PBX.

It actually uses your internet (WiFi) connection.

Currently supported devices are:

BlackBerry 8520 OS 4.6 & 5.0
BlackBerry Bold 9000 OS 4.6 & 5.0
BlackBerry Bold 9700 OS 5.0
BlackBerry Curve 8900 OS 4.6

Though voip calls can be made from my laptop, i would like to have this feature in my mobile too, for various reasons. My research has told me that there is no easy, free, voip software for blackberry. Blackberry does magic with email access. But not voip. Nokia E series is the best for that. E63,E71 etc gives better voip clarity than my laptop. As far as i know this is the most important “really useful” feature of the E series phones, which have a lot of useless stuff bundled in the menu, wasting space. Bottom line – if Email access in your pocket 24/7 is your first priority – take blackberry. If reliable nearly free international calls within wifi range is your priority – take any nokia E series.

Voice over Internet Protocol has been around since many years. But due to lack of sufficient and affordable bandwidth it was not possible to carry carrier grade voice over Internet Protocol. But since the arrival of low cost internet bandwidth and new speech codecs such as G.729, G.723 which utilizes very low payload to carry carrier class voice it has recently been possible to leverage the true benefits of VoIP. G.723 codec utilizes only 6 Kbps (Kilo Bytes/sec) which is capable of maintaining a constant stream of data between peers and deliver carrier grade voice quality. Lets put this way if you have 8 Mbps internet connection, by using G.723 codec you can run upto 100 telephone lines with crystal clear and carrier grade voice quality. I am also a user of VoIP and have setup a small PBX at home. Since I have discovered VoIP I have never used traditional PSTN service.

Oooohhh!!!! VOIP calling without WiFi or 3G!!! What the title should really read is… VOIP calling that uses your cell/mobile minutes! Yes, make a local mobile phone call to connect to a company that will then route your call to its final destination via VOIP. C’mon! One can do this with any phone so what the #$*^$@! is special about this software? Oh, it figures out what number to dial by itself! So what! We want real VOIP that uses the internet connection not our cell/mobile minutes!!! I think I’ll just use a Nokia with native VOIP built in (E75, N95, etc).
