BlackBerry Cool has a ringtone page you might have already checked out: BlackBerryCool.com/Ringtones. The store is powered by Thumbplay and it shows you the current Top 10 ringtones on their network. I like the Thumbplay service as both a ringtone provider and a full track download system.
This article is the first in a series of articles about BlackBerry development. With App World, third party software vendors and the web, there are a ton of opportunities for an independent developer to make money.
BlackBerry Development in Java – Lection 1: Basic fields in the User Interface
Let’s get right into it. Download the JDE (Java Development Environment) from the BlackBerry website. I personally used the JDE 4.3 for this project but you can also download a newer JDE. For advanced functions like using the BlackBerry Storm accelerometer or touch screen, you have to install JDE 4.7.
For advanced features and other APIs you may want to use, you need code-signing keys from RIM. You can purchase signing keys here. The keys cost $20 which is a bargain considering you can use the keys forever, and they’re going to help you make a great BlackBerry application. Make sure to read more about the keys because they’re an important part of BlackBerry development.
Bryte Software are working on an application that I’m personally really excited about. They have begun the internal alpha testing on a new Basecamp portal specifically designed to work with Blackberry platform called “Kompass.” Kompass is the first Basecamp portal made to work on BlackBerry.
Just in case you’re not familiar with Basecamp, it is the world’s leading web-based project management application. They currently have over 3,000,000 users. However, to date, only one BlackBerry application has ever been created for mobile access to Basecamp and it is no longer receiving ample support. This has left many BlackBerry users (including myself) in the dark while iPhone developers create a multitude of apps. I even know of certain individuals switching to the iPhone or buying an iPod Touch specifically for the Basecamp applications.
MobileSyrup got the scoop on the BlackBerry Tour 9630 coming to Bell. The device will be launching mid-July, and the full internal spec sheet is available.
Although there are no pricing details available, but the device has got some really interesting network support:
Viigo has got 2 solid updates for you this week. The first is Viigo’s tennis service now offers the ability to quickly and easily access live match results, the schedule of upcoming tournaments and the world rankings for both the ATP men’s professional tennis tour and the WTA or women’s professional tennis tour.
The second update is that there are a couple of big media/television conferences taking place in Banff starting tomorrow where Viigo is the official mobile app for both events.
