US train, light rail and subway schedules for BlackBerry

Comments

trainschedule

Trainlogic.net is a site for train, light rail and subway schedules throughout the US. They have recently released an app for their services which lets you plan rail trips with up to two connections. The app also works in offline mode.

The app will also combine rail networks such as NJT, PATH, LIRR and Amtrak, if you want. It shows maps of your trip, any stop, and lets find out if the train you’re on is making it on time. The app advises you on peak trains, suboptimal trains, etc.

See Trainlogic for covered schedules.

TrainSchedule GPS BlackBerry edition is available for the special price of $6.75 until Jun 26.

Calx Real Icon BlackBerry theme features true 3D icons

Comments

Real Icon Theme

This theme looks fairly nice in that the icons are all 3D and the theme generally looks pretty clean. I also appreciate the circular battery and signal meter icons.

In order to create the 3D icons, the developer had each modeled and rendered in its own scene to give a true 3D feel to the theme. Some of the modern rendering techniques used feature caustics, global illumination and HDRI lighting.

The Calx Real Icon theme is available for the BlackBerry Bold, Curve 8900 and Storm for $7.

The creators of BBFIleScout have had a ton of user feedback since the release of their free file manager for BlackBerry. They have now released version 1.0 of BBFileScout and there are quite a few major improvements.

Latest updates:

  • Options reorganized – on BlackBerry devices it’s quite common to separate the application options into various screens – this makes the options way more organized and easier to understand.
  • Path entry fields (Startup Path, Thumbnail Storage & Playlist Directory) show now an additional button that allows you to browse in the file system to make an appropriate selection (in the past this was only possible via the menu).

Some of the core features that have been maintained are:

  • BBFileScout is a file system browser for your BlackBerry (including hidden files)
  • Create directories, copy, move, rename, or delete files
  • Zip files or complete directory structures
  • Extract Zip archives (incl. structures)
  • Copy and delete complete directory structures
  • Open all media files (supported by your BlackBerry)
  • Register additional file types with other (3rd party) applications (if supported)

Download BBFileScout for BlackBerry devices with OS 4.3+

Free BlackBerry call reminder app works with calendar and messages

Comments

LaterDude

Recently, Fabian was on Twitter asking about what new BlackBerry application to make. I’m not sure if this is the product of that vote but if it was, it’s an incredibly fast turn around. His latest app is called LaterDude and the app allows you to set reminders to call someone back.

From your Call Log or from your Messages application (on some devices, both work, on others only one works) you select an entry, press Menu then ‘Remind me later!’ and now a selection pops up when you want to get notified again about calling back.

It creates a calendar entry at the selected time and date. Make sure that you set the following in the Calendar-Options:

1. Open up the Calendar
2. Click Menu then Options
3. General Options
4. Default Reminder
5. Set it to 0 min.

Download LaterDude for free for your BlackBerry.

VIVA, Alcatel-Lucent and RIM launch BlackBerry solution in Kuwait

Comments

kuwait_city_liberation_tower

Kuwait now has access to the full range of BlackBerry services. VIVA, Alcatel-Lucent and RIM have announced the launch of devices such as the BlackBerry Curve 8900 and BlackBerry Bold as well as service with BlackBerry Enterprise Server and BlackBerry Internet Service.

Based on its distribution agreement with RIM, Alcatel-Lucent is leveraging its strong local presence in the region to provide VIVA with end-to-end support services for the BlackBerry solution. With Alcatel-Lucent managing integration and deployment, VIVA can focus on delivering customer facing services, enabling the operator to quickly meet market demand.

This trend is indicative of the Middle Eastern strategy with carriers and RIM. While the Middle East provides ample opportunity for low end devices and prepaid solutions, the majority of Middle Eastern countries are getting the “luxury line” of BlackBerry devices such as the 8900 and Bold. I’m curious to see if carriers begin selling Pearl devices in these regions.

New Canadian surveillance legislation is obsolete for BlackBerry users

Comments

mobile_security_card

New Canadian legislation is forcing Internet service providers to make it possible for police and intelligence officers to intercept online communications and get personal information about subscribers, in a “timely” manner without a warrant. This personal information includes names, address and internet addresses.

The bill will allow law enforcement officials to obtain transmission data that is sent or received via telephone and require telecommunications companies to keep data related to specific communications or subscribers if that information is needed in an investigation and requested via a preservation order.

While it is important for police and government officials to prevent the spread of illegal materials such as child pornography and arrest those involved in serious illegal activities, one must wonder how technically viable this bill actually is.

Regardless of whether the carrier allows the interception of voice and data coming from your BlackBerry, your device can be very easily encrypted, making it impossible to listen in. One such product that will do this, is G&D’s mobile security card. With this security card you can save data and have it encrypted in case of theft. The card also provides you with secure email, device protection and even voice encryption. With companies such as G&D, this legislation is quickly rendered obsolete.
