The adult entertainment industry on BlackBerry

The adult entertainment industry is known for fueling a lot of growth on the web. According to Lewis Perdue, author of Eroticabiz: How Sex Shaped the Internet, “without business and technical pioneers in the online sex business, the World Wide Web would never have grown so big so quickly.”

The online world has several accomplishments to thank the adult entertainment industry for. For example, in the mid-1990s, Richard Gordon founded Electronic Card Systems, which “pioneered credit card transactions for a wide range of disreputable sites”, according to the New York Times.

Streaming media can attribute much of its success to sleaze as well. Danni Ashe, founder of seminal softcore site Danni’s Hard Drive, noted that “the adult entertainment industry was the first to use streaming JPEG push video, which was video that worked…in the browser and didn’t require a plug-in.”

That’s not to say porn is a driving force behind all things good on the internet. It’s also the driving force behind everything we hate about the internet. Spam, malware, popups and browser hijacking are all a direct result of harmful pornography sites.

When it comes to the BlackBerry, the mobile web has several forces behind it. RIM is constantly trying to improve the BlackBerry browser experience, and they’re making good progress. Third party browsers such as Opera are gaining incredible popularity in the BlackBerry community and are helping move the mobile internet experience closer to the desktop experience. The upcoming Skyfire browser boasts being able to provide your BlackBerry with all the functionality that the desktop can. So what, if any, impact will the adult entertainment industry have on BlackBerry web browsing?

I sat down with the owner of Pinota.com, an adult entertainment site for BlackBerry to talk about the BlackBerry web experience and how it pertains to adult entertainment.

Kyle: How did you get started on Pinota?

Pinota Paul: I’ve been a big fan of mobile gadgets for a long time. In fact I can safely say I am obsessed with my BlackBerry. I read books, play games and much more every day from my BlackBerry and one thing I have always liked was viewing my pornography collection from a mobile device.

Before Pinota, there were really only a few options to do this. I could take the time to search and download new images from a variety of adult web sites and then transfer them to my SD card and view them in the Media Center. This method, as anybody who already does this knows, is a slow process.

The other option is to view them on a web site made for mobile devices. Typically these sites are littered with ad links and the images are tiny, grainy and processed to meet the lowest denominator of device which always seemed to me to be something like the original Motorola bricks from the early nineties. Sick with loosing precious bandwidth and time to annoying porn ads and poor web site design, it occurred to me that if I was going to enjoy my collection of images I was going to have to build something myself.

Pinota began as a hacked together personal image gallery program I wrote for the web so that I could view the images I uploaded to my personal web site. Each image was resized to fit my Blackberry Curve’s screen and I even rotated some of the picture to maximize the use of the screen and eliminate having to scroll to see the entire image. From this point I realized how much fun this had become and I really wanted to begin publishing my own adult content site with this new software and thus Pinota was born. On a side note I chose the name Pinota because it was in reference to pin-ups over the air (PIN + OTA). I actually didn’t know it meant “to stack” in Swedish which I think is an interesting consequence.

Kyle: What technological hurdles did you have to overcome to design an adult site for BlackBerry?

Paul: One of the many things we decided early on was that we wanted as many people to enjoy the site as possible. One of the biggest hurdles we were faced with was the browser settings which we had absolutely no control over. It didn’t help that the default settings was low image resolution. Then I discovered mobile flash.

Mobile flash is the same technology used in the BlackBerry themes with the backgrounds that switch or that have planes or fishes moving across your screen. Using this technology I built what I believe is the worlds first all flash web site for the Blackberry. By using flash, it gave us the ability to show high resolution images, place objects anywhere on the screen, do a slideshow and enable short cut keys for easy viewing. It also enabled us to server always changing dynamic content to the site without daily administration on our part.

Kyle: Although RIM is seeing a shift in their customer base, to what is now 50% consumer, it is still an enterprise device. Given that, are you seeing much success with your site? Personally, I would think business users would be weary of these services.

Paul: Our membership has also grown 10 times faster in the month of May than previous months and is directly attributed to our free trial. We also continue the tradition of no referral ads on the mobile members site and unlike other sites, we are 100% committed to protecting our members privacy information.

Kyle: Have you seen any interesting data come out of your analytics?

Paul: Well, one thing I like to look at is all the different BlackBerry models that have viewed Pinota. Sometimes I catch a model type that isn’t out to the public yet and that’s fun. I also see the Siemens SK65 come up in my analytics which is a non-BlackBerry device that runs the BlackBerry OS.

Kyle: I once tried to purchase the domain blackberryporn.com and guess who bought it three days before me? RIM! Looks like RIM is trying to shut the industry out of some high value domain names and keep the adult entertainment beast at bay.

Paul: Adult entertainment is here to stay. Sorry RIM!
