The 8520 is my first real Blackberry experience. Though I've played around with the Bold 9700 and 9630 Tour at Best Buys enough to feel the difference. I'm also coming from touch screen phones such as iPhone & Android Google G1 and I guess my fingers have become wanting of something more being desensitized due to the touch screen no physical feedback experience.

I like the 8520 just fine. But here are my issues. Though it is fine for the buck, it does feel a bit cheaper than the Bold & the Tour of course. The keys are a little hard for me to get used to, smaller. And the hard cold plastic keys of the 8520 feel a little cheap to me. My battery cover is always a little loose. The size is fine, but if they only worked on the keypad a bit more it would make a much better phone handling experience.

Wish : I like that RIM is trying to make a less expensive / Sportier / rougher phone with the direction of the 8520. Maybe if they made the keypad with the same textured soft rubber material as the sides it would feel much softer and more grip to the keys. And the shape of the keys should be something more like the Bold or Tour so that the keys aren't so high or shaped in a way that they get in the way of other keys. I find it taking longer than I'd like to get used to the keys. I typed faster on iPhone touchscreen, as well as the G1 physical keypad.

What I do like about these BBs over the touch screen phones is that everything feels more immediate, and responsive. The keypad is always there. Just start typing a name and you get a list of contacts right away. I got tired of the lag between pulling up the keypad, selecting menus, and the lag for pulling up contact lists when typing in iPhones and other touchscreen phones. It was just something that really frustrated me.

I sort of wish that the entire back of the 8520 would be rubberized for better grip. Also if it were thicker maybe, it would fit better in the palm. They would also be able to fit in more tech & bigger battery so power could last for an entire week with heavy usage maybe. I would like for RIM to develop this more, a sportier, tougher phone that is immediate and responsive and just gets things done! A little more screen real estate would be nice too...I know, I'm rambling.
