BlackBerry feature requests: what do you want to see?

While RIM releases device after device that combines form factors, we’re still waiting for them to include new features in the hardware and software. Adding these components will add to the price, but they also unlock a plethora of possibilities for developers. Lets look at some basic hardware and software features that will make the BlackBerry experience better.

Video Out: There are several smartphones on the market that support video out and it has great potential for the device. Not only can you attach peripherals to the video out such as a projector and television, but you can also have the video output interact with an application. An app that combines your device’s camera with a projector, could have Project Natal potential on a smaller scale.

Compass: The iPhone 3GS compass is a seemingly minor upgrade to the device, but again, it’s great for developers. Augmented Reality is the future of how we interact with the real world using our device and the compass makes these apps much easier to make.

Dual Touchscreen/QWERTY: A Bold-like device with a touchscreen has been rumored to be in development but we haven’t seen any proof. A dual touchscreen/QWERTY device has huge implications for the end user in terms of experience, but it also has big implications for developers. Being able to develop an application with a smooth touchscreen interface and QWERTY input is the best of both worlds.

I leave it to you BlackBerry Nation. What features would you like to see RIM implement?

More system memory without having to resort to SD card. 128MB? In 2009? Come on RIM, Apple hasn’t so TOTALLY cornered the market on flash memory that you can’t do better than the measely 256MB your hottest new device (Tour) has.
Complete overhaul of web browser, OR allow other browsers like Opera or Bolt or whatever to integrate into the OS as the “default” browser.
OTA device backup for BIS-only users.
A TRUE ability to backup OTA-installed apps. Forcing us to do some kludgy hacks is ridiculous.
Web client for App World, that is integrated/synced with the client app on the device. Let me shop from my PC an the next time I launch the device app I’m prompted to download/install what I bought!

Full screen touch with slide out qwerty (my personal BB holy grail…and something that *everyone* in my office is hoping/waiting/pining for) with:

    1. More onboard memory
    2. Faster processors
    3. Wifi

    Also:
    1. Better app development tools
    2. Scripting language so that you can make apps do what you want w/o having to spin up a full development solution

Simply once side Bold, other side Storm. Can’t leave without physical keyboard and can’t work on a tiny screen. When I need to type email, small screen OK but when I need to browse internet or other tasks (i.e. RDP) I need much bigger screen.

Wow, Onyxhawke. Thanks for your great input. I hope RIM takes into account your idea about adding Wi-Fi to their remaining devices that don’t have them. What a novel idea. (sense the sarcasm?)

How about coming up with something a little more unique? Something that will grab the attention of non blackberry owners. Or something that’ll make my current experience unbelievably better. Something that will truly take our blackberry devices to the next level.

And your comment about touchscreens being slow to react…not all touchscreens have to be like the storm. Also, obviously there’s a ton of people complaining about memory leaks…on board memory IS currently a problem and NEEDS to be addressed.

    Mostly 2 things..

More apps, power and a bigger screen. Iphone anyone ? Hehe. No, the iphone is only touchscreen and the keyboard don’t come near a physical bbery one.
Forget the erractic Storm, it’s a rambling error.

The perfect form factor, Palm already done it with Pre.

Basically copy the Pre form factor with a better keyboard, keep bberry OS but add more fun with easy contact sync, threaded everything, faster operations, easier app port and development so everyone will join.

Not really tough to figure it out. What are you doing RIM ??

I would like RIM to produce a BlackBerry-enabled printer.

Also,an easy way to removed pre-installed but unwanted applications (I never use voice dialling).

I would like a sound profile switcher based on GPS location. Think of it – you change your sounds based on where you are. When I am at the office – vibrate. Home – normal. Pool – Loud. Movies – silent. It would be automatic based on where you are with a quick vibrate notification letting you know it has changed.

Move the “close” to the TOP of the menu when you press the blackberry button from any application or screen! I get so tired of having to scroll to the bottom of the menu to close an application! (especially when I have several open and am closing them one after the other)

Allow user selection of the “reply from” email address. Currently works for forwarding but not for reply. With many people using email aggregators like GMAIL and Yahoo, this would be a very useful feature.

  • TAB KEY RIM-otherf**ers

    A f**king TAB KEY.
And, “Oh you don't really need a Tab key,” is BS marketing doublespeak, not a real answer.

I'm still waiting for Blackberry to provide a video output for input source to TV, computer, vehicle DVD, etc. And a TAB KEY would definitely be a big stress reducer for those of us who substitute our BB for a laptop. The Storm 2 highlighting function is a real frustration to use! Come on RIM! We love you but need you to pick up the pace in the techie race!!!
