BlackBerry feature requests: what do you want to see?

While RIM releases device after device that combines form factors, we’re still waiting for them to include new features in the hardware and software. Adding these components will add to the price, but they also unlock a plethora of possibilities for developers. Lets look at some basic hardware and software features that will make the BlackBerry experience better.

Video Out: There are several smartphones on the market that support video out and it has great potential for the device. Not only can you attach peripherals to the video out such as a projector and television, but you can also have the video output interact with an application. An app that combines your device’s camera with a projector, could have Project Natal potential on a smaller scale.

Compass: The iPhone 3GS compass is a seemingly minor upgrade to the device, but again, it’s great for developers. Augmented Reality is the future of how we interact with the real world using our device and the compass makes these apps much easier to make.

Dual Touchscreen/QWERTY: A Bold-like device with a touchscreen has been rumored to be in development but we haven’t seen any proof. A dual touchscreen/QWERTY device has huge implications for the end user in terms of experience, but it also has big implications for developers. Being able to develop an application with a smooth touchscreen interface and QWERTY input is the best of both worlds.

I leave it to you BlackBerry Nation. What features would you like to see RIM implement?

A webkit browser as good as the one in iPhone.
BB’s browser is such a shame!

    Ditto, more application space.

Oh and VPN for corporate sites.

@Scott Collins, I fully agree, adding capacity to the BlackBerry itself (and not just a memory card) is a great idea for both data-heavy apps and for folks like me who need an unnatural amount of games.

I would like to see Contact management improve. The new version of BlackBerry Messenger has a great barcode system, making exchanging contact info easier and more fun. A simple bluetooth app could work here too.

IR would be nice so it could change the channel on my television.
While we are asking for video out, how about video in for recording?

    Hello, RIM? Are you listening?

I would like the ability to easily add a web shortcut for any webpage of my choosing to the app “desktop” or whatever we call it

Video conferencing, better camera picture quality, ability to pay for things using my phone (really not a RIM thing but still, it would be nice).

touchscreen with a slide out QWERTY like the Treo. A Bold like device with a touchscreen is just too small of a screen to take FULL advantage of “touch” capabilities. So maybe a Storm with a slide out 9000 QWERTY. That right there would be the ultimate smart phone.

The system memory limitation needs to be addressed soon or Blackberry will start to lose customers.

I would like to see, as was mentioned above, both a touchscreen and a slide out hardware based QWERTY keyboard.
Also, I would like to see EMS messaging support included in addition to SMS/MMS. This should not be difficult to implement and could possibly be enabled by a small software update. I was very disappointed to find EMS messaging missing from my Storm when so many low end cell phones have this feature.

    Just my 2 cents.

I agree a “storm-a-like” with a qwewrty keyboard. The HTC Touch Pro2 in blackberry guise would keep me happy for a couple of years :).

@Not an iPhone – Not off topic in the slightest. Can’t wait for Skyfire to hit BlackBerry and show RIM what a browser should be capable of.

    1. Automatic relational linking of data items (just like the Apple Newton from so many years ago). For example, if I enter a meeting with Joe Smith into the Calendar, I should be able to access Joe’s telephone number by clicking on his name, and so forth.

    2. Touchscreen + keyboard

    3. Better ability to set short cuts

Run Apps from/on SD memory. This is a no brainer. The memory limitations of the BlackBerry are archaic and needs serious and immediate attention. Without this the other ideas are essentially worthless.

How about a contact app that allows you to add as many mobile, work, home, fax numbers as you want. Also to customize any of those fields.
