BlackBerry feature requests: what do you want to see?

While RIM releases device after device that combines form factors, we’re still waiting for them to include new features in the hardware and software. Adding these components will add to the price, but they also unlock a plethora of possibilities for developers. Lets look at some basic hardware and software features that will make the BlackBerry experience better.

Video Out: There are several smartphones on the market that support video out and it has great potential for the device. Not only can you attach peripherals to the video out such as a projector and television, but you can also have the video output interact with an application. An app that combines your device’s camera with a projector, could have Project Natal potential on a smaller scale.

Compass: The iPhone 3GS compass is a seemingly minor upgrade to the device, but again, it’s great for developers. Augmented Reality is the future of how we interact with the real world using our device and the compass makes these apps much easier to make.

Dual Touchscreen/QWERTY: A Bold-like device with a touchscreen has been rumored to be in development but we haven’t seen any proof. A dual touchscreen/QWERTY device has huge implications for the end user in terms of experience, but it also has big implications for developers. Being able to develop an application with a smooth touchscreen interface and QWERTY input is the best of both worlds.

I leave it to you BlackBerry Nation. What features would you like to see RIM implement?

How about a contact app that allows you to add as many mobile, work, home, fax numbers as you want. Also to customize any of those fields.

More app space; I am about ready to switch to iPhone because I can’t store more than 10 apps on the blackberry bold… RIDICULOUS!!

I have many friends in the same boat. Fix the problem or lose a customer for life, RIM!!!!!!

Look Ma, one hand:o ne of the main differences between BBs and other smartphones in the earlier models was the ability to use them with one hand. Primarily two handed operation is for laptops. You can imagine the frustration when I saw the charger port on my new Tour to be smnack dab in the middle of where I hold the phone? Who was in charge of that design? You’re fired!

The one thing that really keeps me from saying my bold is the perfect phone is the memory limit. There isn’t a moment when I’m downloading a new app, or browsing the web, or anything at all for that matter, where I don’t have the thought “oh god how much memory do i have left” in the back of my head. I’m constantly checking my memory status every time I pick up my phone just to make sure it hasn’t dropped below 10mb. I really really would like to not have to worry about my phone’s application memory getting too low every second.

Flash support would mean real YouTube, and By that I mean the YouTube you get when you press the HQ Button and turn up your computer speakers.

I wonder what’s holding us back from getting a full, PC-grade web browser, on the best smartphones on the planet.

I bet you it’s a conspiracy; productivity would drop significantly worldwide.

More memory, possibly optional hi-mem units or certified system expansion, multiple memory slots, Microvision pico projector, on board video processor with HTMI out, SVG for scalable icons in applications. Higher res video, at least 640×480 and forward looking webcam for chat would be nice. Enhanced development tools including APIs, widgets and graphical builders for easy and consistent UI and such. I respect the memory footprint being small but getting started on BlackBerry is not as easy for me as for instance getting the latest Qt tools to develop cross platform on PC.

Oh, new video chips coming online now would mean no Flash 10 issues, but I prefer to see a web going HTML5 and ogg personally. Finally, my vision is a BlackBerry that you can dock or attache a wearable interface and functionally use if for almost anything you would do with a laptop except things like music or video production.

I have the 8900, about 25 apps installed including a couple large ones like eOffice, SugarSync, and 2-3 other multi mb ones, I’ve still got tons of memory free. My wishes are for: multi window browsing, flash (much as I hate it and understand the security issues), the ability to remove unused components, installing apps to the SD and simplified bluetooth transfers.

For the Storm to work as advertised.
For a decent browser… BB Browser is a sham!
For decent free apps like the iPhone.
For radio signal to not keep dropping out.
To not have to do a battery-pull twice a week.
For the Storm to not slow down when it gets to about 12 degrees Celsius.
For the Storm to be retrofitted with friggin wi-fi.
For better support in Australia from Vodafone.
For BB, Viigo and such to realise that Nth America is not the only place on the planet!!

For my Bold, I would like a simple, single paintbrush app, that would easily let me crop, resize, paint onto, rupper-band select parts of, type (words) onto and append pictures onto…a JPG picture. Think as if you had the Windows Paintbrush app on your BlackBerry. I know, this would probably be easy on the Storm, but I don’t have a Storm.

I think that BlackBerry needs to add support for ActiveSync natively. I know that they want to sell their BES solution to the world, but that cost money, hardware, and support for businesses. Every other smartphone on the market gets the idea. Microsoft Exchange is the largest available mail server on the market and most companies use it as well as Lotus. Both applications will support ActiveSync.

I think BlackBerry will lose customers (and I’ve been seeing it happen) for smartphones that natively use ActiveSync. I mean think about it, Palm Treo, Palm Pre, Windows Mobile 5/6/6.1/6.5, iPhone, and even some phones that are not smartphones (Samsung Jet) are able to get corporate email through ActiveSync.

If they don’t announce soon that they will have it, I know I’m moving back to Windows Mobile. I need my email, calendar, contacts, and tasks out of exchange from my smartphone. That’s the point of having a Smart Phone.

    - trackball or trackpad on the new storm – would greatly improve screen navigation on the touchscreen
    - i agree on the pc-grade browser, a must!
    - absolutely agree on wi-fi, faster processor, more memory and a complete overhaul to the OS
    - some updates to the storm keyboard, maybe a tab key and easier access to commonly used symbols like ?, etc.

to those looking for shortcuts, sounds like you need quicklaunch!

How about native picture editing? At least the ability to rotate a picture and save it in its new orientation.

MORE MEMORY PLEASE! I don’t even have that many 3rd party apps on my bold and all my pics, music, email attachments, and videos are stored on my memory card. With that said after about a month of buying my bold my calandar appointments older then 2 weeks started to disapear. For BES users this is unexceptable. I’m very dependent on my calendar and hate the fact that every time I want to go back more then two weeks i have to turn on my pc and log into outlook. In my opinion the whole point of a smart phone is to limit my pc time.

Which brings me to another point…what’s up with the browser?

And why does RIM keep launching 2 mp cameras?

    Ideally
    1) Much more memory to prevent calendar memory leaks
    2) Storm like device with slide out Bold like QWERTY
    3) Update the browser…please!
    3) Update the camera and video…you’re telling me you can’t get a better camera on these phones?
    4) Video conferencing (Skype, ovoo, etc.)

Throw in the new Mac compatilbility desktop software and right there you’ve just created the iphone killer.

    Touchscreens are evil.

They are slower than a keyboard, get the screen dirty, and less accurate than a keyboard.
The best touchscreens are not on the Job’s Cult devices, the Google ADHD devices, or sadly the BlackBerry’s, the Samsungs have the best I’ve seen.

Second, I don’t know what devices the people complaining about memory space have, but I have 70.4 mb of free space for applications on my BB.

The apps installed are: Eoffice, Viggo, Laterdude, Bolt, Opera, SugarSync, Facebook, Slacker, The Hockey News, Shazam, Vision for BlackBerry, VR+, Evernote, ScoreMobile, QuickPull, Google Sync, Gmail, Berry Converter, Iskoot, Pinstack, BB App World, Texts from last night, Light Reading, Amazon, IHeart Radio, (an unnamed banking app), Save to Memopad. And that’s on top of all the standard stuff, Doc’s to go (never got around to uninstalling it, EOffice is better.)

I can understand the contacts management, calender, browser, and more memory, I’d like a wi-fi or bluetooth backup/restore option too. And I never, ever want to have to use a touch screen, and video conferencing is a waste of resources.

More system memory without having to resort to SD card. 128MB? In 2009? Come on RIM, Apple hasn’t so TOTALLY cornered the market on flash memory that you can’t do better than the measely 256MB your hottest new device (Tour) has.
Complete overhaul of web browser, OR allow other browsers like Opera or Bolt or whatever to integrate into the OS as the “default” browser.
OTA device backup for BIS-only users.
A TRUE ability to backup OTA-installed apps. Forcing us to do some kludgy hacks is ridiculous.
Web client for App World, that is integrated/synced with the client app on the device. Let me shop from my PC an the next time I launch the device app I’m prompted to download/install what I bought!
