Today I received my Sprint BlackBerry Tour and it’s amazing. But, you’re not here for a review, you’re here because you want to unlock your Sprint BlackBerry Tour. Here’s what you do. Thanks to my friend at CIO.com, Al Sacco, I knew the steps to unlocking it. Fortunately, the good folks at Sprint will walk you through the process as well. Here’s what I did to unlock the SIM slot on the Sprint BlackBerry Tour.

1. Call Sprint International Support – (817) 698-4199, prompt #2
2. Ask them if they’d kindly unlock your SIM slot on your BlackBerry Tour
3. Turn off your wireless network connection on the Tour (yes, you’ll have to call from another phone)
4. Click on Options > Advanced Options > SIM Card
5. Type MEPD
6. Type MEP2
7. The representative should give you a 16-digit code
8. Thank the representative for their help
9. Reboot your phone and you’re ready to go

There you have it! It took me about 5 minutes to get my phone unlocked. I tested my Sprint BlackBerry Tour with a T-Mobile SIM card and was able to access the web, use BlackBerry Messenger and send and receive messages.

Hello, I just got my Black Berry Tour, and it's locked to the Sprint Network as well, Unfortunately I don't have the Sim Card, the old owner still has it and it not an option to get it, I can't access the Sim Card Options without a "Valid" Sim Card, is there any other way to unlock my phone?
  • Bulldog
Thank you very much, i'm gonna call them right now ...
  • aquinselby
I just contacted the Sprint International Support via their live chat feature and the person told me my phone was unlocked. I have never unlocked it. I bought it brand new last year at Best Buy. Is this possible or did the person not know what she was talking about? Since I don't know anything about these phones I didn't want to argue with her. I have used the phone in the country of Panama and inserted a local SIM card and it work perfectly. This surely wouldn't have unlocked the phone?
  • sunny
sprint decided that most of their phones should be unlocked. So most tours were sold unlocked, even before you open the box. Verizon on the other hand locked their tours. I wish I bought the Sprint one, Verizon reps were a bitch to get my phone unlocked.
  • mTrippp
If they already sold most of their phones unlocked, how can I check if mine is unlocked without having another SIM?
  • aquinselby
I just contacted the live chat on the sprint international support and the person I was chatting with told me my phone was unlocked. I have never unlocked it. Is this a possibility or did the girl not know what she was talking about? I bought my BB Tour @ Best Buy.
  • JJR
The (female) Sprint rep was a total b**ch to my Fiance who just moved to Canada and wants to use a Rogers/ATT SIM... I guess we will have to call again.

I sim unlocked a sprint blackberry 9630 and am using t-mobile. However I cannot use the email client or web browser. Can someone please let me kn ow how to access and change those settings to to compatible with t-mobile. Thank you.
  • ray
hello i just wanted to know how did you use the tour on tmobile? i have the tour from sprint and unlocked it but when i make a call it says No Circuit/Channel Available.
  • Maurice
Go to Options>Mobile Network> Change Network Technology to GSM/UMTS, then change Network Mode to 2G..........everything should work now
  • Prit
Hi,I have ordered a BB Tour and how will I know if it is already unlocked when I receive it?Plz help.
  • Cindy
I called the above, they told me that the phone is already unlocked. took sometime to convinced the support lady to unlock the SIM card. She didn't give me the 16-digit code, she said she did it on Sprint side, so i didn't need to do anything on the phone myself.

I didn't have the "Options -> Advanced Options -> SIM card" before (?), i rebooted the phone, and I then double checked, and see the Options -> Advanced Options. SIM card says "security disabled".

To test that (I am going overseas in a week, so i really need it), i have a att sim that has voice and text only (no web), i followed the instructions above to swap sim and change to "GSM/UMTS", "2G", and it works (i can called and send text). They did tell me to get a 128k card though.

So thanks for all the tips!

My Sprint Tour 9630 was not unlocked like you mention in the post, however I purchased an unlock code online from www.mobileunlockingcode.com , I try to call Sprint before buying the code, but they wont give or unlock the phone as I was not with the Sprint for more then 90 days. However, unlocking it online was very easy and fast. Now I am with T-mobile, I have no problem with Sprint, its only that their signals are not very strong where I live.
  • There is a mis-understanding in this thread. When Sprint says the phone is "unlocked", what they really mean is, it's "partially unlocked". Meaning, you can use any SIM so long as it's not an ATT or T-Mobile SIM.

To truly unlock the phone you need the 16 digit code and the instructions at the top of the page.

If you call sprint and they say your phone is unlocked, they mean it's unlocked to use sim cards abroad. NOT AN ATT OR T-MOBILE SIM.

i was able to get my 16 digit code. when i go to option-advance options-type MEPD- then i have to type MEP2 nothing happens???? what am i doing wrong? is there a specific way in typing this code?????

  • Kari
Hey Juan I am having the same trouble with my Blackberry Tour did you get this resolved?
  • andy
I think you have to put the DEC number first and then the 16 digit code.
  • Chris

or say i call them and they unlock it does it unlock my sim card?
  • mike
so if the phone gets unlocked.. is ur sim card unlocked to be put in other phones as in like say iphone or the storm and i could be using one of them phones and still get my bill through sprint?..
  • gstarr
no ur sim isnt unlocked, the phone is unlocked to accommodate the sim, if u unlock your bb tour and use for example a tmobile sim in there, and you decide to get a bb storm from verizon you would have to unlock the storm too in order for your tmobile sim to work in it
  • Jmcnpryncess
Hello, if I found a sprint bb tour and it is locked, will I be able to have the phone activated by calling sprint or is this illegal?

I just received my Sprint BB Tour and it arrived unlocked. I travel frequently in the Caribbean and (while in the US) popped my Digicel SIM card in and was able to switch to GSM mode and get service.
  • Diesel
I got my Tour through a promotional event, however, because of this I have no information about the account (such as the name on the account). When I called/ chatted with them they demanded the account information before they can give me the code... Anyone have a clue on what to do next??

this was a GREAT help - Sprint's store people in the US completely screwed up my setup, and these guys had it fixed in under 5 minutes.
  • VincentChase
I bought my Sprint BB 9630 and it was already completely unlocked. However, my brother-in-law's was not. But we got his phone unlocked with no problems. They'll give you some harassment if you recently bought the phone or if you haven't been a Sprint customer for a while.

However, just simply explain that you do a lot of international travel where Sprint International is not available (such as Fiji, Tonga, etc.) and they'll take care of you.

That's why they charge a premium to get the phone and why they have an early termination fee.

Keep in mind, when you unlock your phone, apps such as "YouCall" (which is the iPhone like voice mail program) will not work because it will not be able to configure to the network properly!

Also, if you plan on using it on t-mobile, rogers, at&t, etc. you have to change the network setting to 2G only. Although most cell phone companies offer 3g networks, the networks are NOT inter-compatible!

*If they ask you if you want your sim-card unlocked, that's so it can be used on the international network. Tell them you would like the SIM Card "Security Disabled" and for the network to be disabled (under "options>advanced options>SIM Card. And they'll clearly know what you're asking. And if they ask you why, simply state the above "international travel" reason, and they'll stop asking.

**Also, keep in mind, when you contact them, they'll notate this on your account records!

I called Sprint and the rep unlocked my BB 9630 phone. I was asked if I wanted to have my SIM card unlocked. What's my response? I thought unlocking the phone would unlock the sim card. Please advise.
  • Rob
I did the online chat and after I gave the lady my imei (dec) number she said that it was already unlocked (I just got the phone yesterday).

    Thanks
  • Jay
Does the esn have to be clean ?
  • ahmed
Im in Germany and i bought sprint blackberry tour from ebay how can it be unlocked?
    plz advice thanks
  • Dee
Would I be able to unlock the Blackberry Tour if the ESN is bad? Thanks.
  • Marcus
I have a question I unlocked my Sprint tour and I am using both Sprint and T-mobile service on my phone and I was just wondering if I needed to have blackberry internet service with both carriers or just with one carrier?
  • Chris
Just get an 8830 and be done with it. The Sprint version comes unlocked out of the box, I've used mine internationally (on 3 different continents other than North America) and domestically (US) for 2 years now without issue or need to contact any support representatives. Read your instruction manual or go to www.blackberryforums.com, you'd be amazed with what you can learn...
  • I'm surprised they just hand you the unlock code without harassing you.
  • Palak Desai
I did this, but forgot to turn off the radio before entering in the code...is this going to mess anything up? thanks

Not new to the BlackBerry world, just new to Unlocking one:

This may seem like a dumb question but.....
If I get the Tour unlocked to be able to use the SIM CARD does that mean
    1) Now that its unlocked I ONLY have the option use the Tour with a SIM Card
    2) I'm can still use it for Sprint but I can switch WHENEVER I Want to a SIM CARD
    or
    3) PHADE, what the hell are you talking about?
  • mdg
used the "live chat" feature on www.sprint.com/international. the representative on the chat was able to give me the unlock code in a few minutes. Quick and easy!
