Cool app! Mobile Speech to Speech Arabic Translator for BlackBerry

This might be one of the most incredible applications I have seen to date for BlackBerry. Sakhr Software have created an application called Mobile Speech to Speech Arabic Translator for BlackBerry, that does exactly what the name says. Check out the above YouTube clip for a demonstration.

The Spoken Translator makes communication between English and Arabic speakers easy with the following features:

1. Users freely speak English or Arabic sentences into their BlackBerry.
2. Users see the translation displayed in Arabic and English script.
3. Users can hear the translation played out loud.

The application uses a technology developed by Sakhr called natural language processing (NLP) technology. The app has far-reaching implications for business as well as consumers. Enterprise users will be able to communicate with employees in the field who don’t speak English and tourists will be able to navigate Arab countries much more easily.

Sakhr Software has announced it will showcase its Mobile Speech to Speech Arabic Translator for BlackBerry at the LandWarNet Conference in Fort Lauderdale, August 18–20, 2009.

“[O]ne of the most incredible applications I have seen to date for BlackBerry.”

    Are you kidding me?

Very roughly, less than five percent of the population speaks Arabic — and that’s being extremely generous.

Even assuming that a significant percentage of these people use BlackBerries, how is this application so incredible? Does the current BlackBerry population have such a significant contingent of Arab-speakers among them that makes this application marketable on a large scale?

It’s definitely cool for a miniscule segment of BlackBerry users, but that’s about it. To call it one of the most incredible apps ever is hyperbole to say the least.

    Relax, Kyle.

@Jake – Good point, it isn’t so much the fact that it’s Arabic specific, it’s the implications of making translation mobile and so easy to do.

While the app is awesome, I should have made it more clear I just think the technology behind the app is the what I’m excited about.

It’s the first step in the BlackBerry becoming The Hitch Hikers Guide to the Galaxy Babelfish translator. But yeah, my reaction may be a little too soon.

Kyle, I may have been a little harsh there — sorry for the sarcastic remarks, they were unnecessary. But thanks for responding and in doing so politely.

Now if there was a SPANISH translator, that might be one of the coolest apps ever…and incredibly useful for people (like me) who reside in areas with large Latino populations. Any word on that of which you are aware?

    Thanks, Jake

I think that this a great app, living in the metro detroit area with a very high arab population, & eight plus family members serving in iraq all with blackberry smartphones I cant wait to get this app. just think of the advantage of actually knowing what they are saying as i travel thru the different airports. I’m buying on a day one. :-)

I totally agree with the whole thread, and especially if this was a Spanish translator it would be amazing and I would buy depending on the cost of course!
