MyBlackBerry Community Manager talks social media

MyBlackBerry has been live for some time now and it is part of a bigger social media push at RIM. The company is leveraging Facebook, Twitter, forums and blogs, to send out their message.

InsideBlackBerry sat down with MyBlackBerry’s Community Manager Becky Young, to talk about the project and social media at RIM in general.

It’s interesting to see a company such as RIM get into social media as RIM has been known to be a very traditional and conservative company. As times change, and RIM is seeing a great consumer base, inevitably the culture at the company changes with it.

According to Becky, RIM got into MyBlackBerry from “mostly seeing web 2.0 and using web 2.0 tools in our everyday lives outside of RIM. With MyBlackBerry we wanted to do two things: create a place that is all about YOU and YOUR BlackBerry smartphone (not everyman’s BlackBerry smartphone – but yours) and connect this place to the largest BlackBerry smartphone community in the world.”

MyBlackBerry does have a lot of potential but it would be nice to see the site offer something that we can’t get elsewhere. The competitive advantage with RIM will obviously be scope, in that they have the power to bring users in from the entire BlackBerry network, almost effortlessly. Once this community has grown, the question is what will they do with it?

To have your say, join the Feature Request thread on MyBlackBerry and let them know what you want to see.

Canadian government makes final ruling on Nortel LTE sale

RIM has been lobbying very hard to get the Canadian government to intervene in the deal between Nortel and Sony Ericsson. The deal involves the sale of a variety of Nortel’s assets including their LTE operations, which are of great interest to RIM in order to future-proof devices.

The Canadian government has ruled on the issue and declined to review the $1.13 billion sale of Nortel Networks’ CDMA and LTE assets to Ericsson. The announcement was made by Canada’s Industry Minister, Tony Clement, and it closes any possibility of the Canadian government intervening in favor of RIM.

The underlying reasons for which RIM wanted the Canadian government to intervene are vague at best. The Investment Canada Act stipulates that the Canadian government must intervene if the sale of Canadian assets to a foreign country poses some security risk.

“There are no grounds to believe this transaction could be injurious to Canada’s national security,” Clement said Wednesday, adding that Ericsson “has the resources and customer base necessary to bring Canadian innovation to market. … This deal is very beneficial to Canada.”

So it looks as though RIM is going to have to find another way to acquire the LTE and CDMA technology it desires.

Are you having trackball issues with your Sprint BlackBerry Tour?

David Eller, an analyst at TownHall Investment Research, is saying the BlackBerry Tour has been experiencing a 50 percent return rate due to problems with the trackball.

Tour owners who are returning the device are complaining that they must roll the trackball repeatedly for it to move the cursor on the screen only minimally. One user said he was on his fourth Tour, after returning the previous three due to problems with the trackball.

Beginning of August, RIM said that a firmware fix would be issued in 30 days and would resolve the problem.

While it may not apply to this issue with the Tour, BlackBerry Cool would like to remind users that you can do 2 things to help fix your BlackBerry trackball:

1) Make sure the sensitivity settings are ideal. Often turning up your sensitivity is helpful for experienced users.
2) You can always replace the trackball yourself.

Are you a Sprint Tour owner? Have you noticed your trackball having issues?

Reminder: RIM promised OS 5 before the end of 2009

Back at WES 2009, RIM put out a statement saying that OS 5, “will follow before the end of the year.” Most of us in the BlackBerry Nation have been expecting this software to launch around this time and we’re all wondering where it is.

While the software will be coming out with the BlackBerry Bold 9700 and the Storm 2 9550/9520, it isn’t clear when older BlackBerry devices will be privy to the upgrade.

At the very least, we know you won’t have to wait longer than January 1st, 2010.

The official statement from RIM is as follows:

“The roll out process has begun for BlackBerry Device Software 5.0 with the recent beta release of BlackBerry JDE 5.0 (BlackBerry Java Development Environment 5.0) to BlackBerry Developer Zone at www.blackberry.com/developers to prepare the BlackBerry developer community for pending device software releases. As can be expected, BlackBerry Device Software 5.0 will follow before the end of the year, as referenced in the “RIM Launches BlackBerry Enterprise Server 5.0″ press release that was issued at WES 2009 (http://press.rim.com/release.jsp?id=2309).”

Just out of curiosity, what device do you have and what OS are you currently running?
