BlackBerry Storm2 Product Manager on Inside BlackBerry

Former BlackBerry Cool EIC Douglas Soltys sat down with BlackBerry Storm2 Product Manager Yasser Mirza, to talk about the device and what went into it.

It must have been a nerve racking experience to be the manager in charge of developing the follow-up to the Storm 1. Even though many users liked the device, it got some really bad Internet mojo and RIM really needed a good followup.

My favorite part of the interview is where Yasser talks about how fast he can type on his Storm2. “I can actually type faster than a QWERTY keypad BlackBerry smartphone. No joke! I’ve clocked in typing “the quick brown fox jumps over the lazy dog” at 10 seconds, which is 60wpm.” Apparently RIM employees are always doing speed trials.

With the new OS 5 release for the 9530, there’s no real incentive for buying a Storm 2. Wi-Fi just isn’t enough; when you’re on Verizon, there’s virtually never a time where you’d have no service, so why care for Wi-Fi? My Storm 9530 is working like a beauty with OS 5. I’m in no rush to buy the Storm 2, although, I will probably buy it sooner than later just to be up-to-date. I stuck with the Storm through all the hardships & now, with OS 5, I feel like my loyalty has paid off. Threaded SMS/MMS, iPhone style scrolling, fluid app launches… it’s Heaven for Storm users! The Storm 2, on the other hand, doesn’t look like much of a difference beyond Wi-Fi & new buttons. Sorry, RIM – just keeping it real. On the bright side, the Storm 2 looks like a great buy for those who are new to the Storm series. Should’a never let that OS 5 out! You would’a had me, Storm 2! LOL

    (Let’s be realistic – I’m still buying a Storm 2.)
