Humor: New stumpy BlackBerry unveiled during show for kids

Comments

I couldn’t resist the title, but there is a show traveling Canada right now called WIRED, and one of their props is an improvised giant BlackBerry. WIRED aims to educate youth about how to deal with cyber-bullying, and some of the challenges kids face growing up in a fully connected world. Funnily enough, the featured BlackBerry has Viigo loaded and a cool theme I haven’t seen yet. I actually don’t mind the square edges on the device and would probably buy a completely square form factor. I spoke to one of the actors Chris Cochrane, and apparently the kids they meet, aged 8-12, all have Facebook profiles and a lot of them have BlackBerrys.

The BlackBerry Developer Conference this year featured the BlackBerry Final 16, where 16 great apps were chosen as the best in App World. The first presenter was Ted Livingston from Unysnced who rebranded their music service as Kik, an awesome DRM-free MP3 player.

The app gives you 3 free plays of any song, and also lets you send it to a friend to hear as well. If you like the song, you can continue to listen to it after your 3 free plays, in exchange for listening to a brief ad. You can also purchase the song right from your BlackBerry.

Everyone who signed up at Dev Con have been getting notifications that Kik will launch in January for Canadians with the US soon to follow.

Adam from CB got news that RIM are sort of offering a Buy One Get One Free deal in App World from now until January 12th, 2010. The promotion works in that when you purchase 2 apps, you can get up to $15 back on your second application, of equal or lesser value. It’s a slightly awkwardly worded campaign but it’s the thought that counts. Refunds can take up to 4-6 weeks or by February 23,2010.

Gym Technik have launched the NextGen BlackBerry Fitness App for the Storm. The problem is, the app is only available for Storm users running OS 4.x and is not compatible with OS 5 or the Storm2.

If you haven’t used the app before, Gym Technik is an app to track your workout routines and optimize them. The app breaks down your workouts with graphs and analytics and gives you a better picture of what you’re doing.
