First of all, I’d like to introduce the mobile operators in China. As you may know, there are now three mobile operators in mainland China. The biggest is China Mobile, which owns TD-SCDMA found in UMTS networks in China. China Unicom is another, and it owns WCDMA and has recently launched the iPhone. The third is China telecom which owns CDMA2000.
BlackBerry is just beginning to become popular in China but there are still some major barriers. Many of my friends use a BlackBerry, but RIM has not established any retail outlets or simple means to buy their devices. Most of us get our Blackberry phones as smuggled goods or from friends abroad. China Mobile now offers BES (BlackBerry Enterprise Server) with the Blackberry 8700, but it comes at a very high price, about 398 RMB- 598 RMB/month ($60 to $85 USD). This is all going to change very soon. The latest news is that China Telecom have announced BIS support, and they are going to be shipping the BlackBerry Storm and Tour in the near future. China Mobile are also rumored to be releasing the BlackBerry Curve 8900 and Bold2 (not sure) soon. We have also heard from an official at China Unicom, who has confirmed they are in talks with RIM, so we will hopefully see some BlackBerry devices from them as well. Overall, China is going to see a big surge in devices around all of mainland China. Continue reading about BlackBerry in China and what RIM can do to succeed
BugMe! is a quick and easy way to remind yourself of daily chores and To Do items. You can take notes, jot down ideas or set a reminder for yourself about an errand you need to run. The app will pop up an alarm when it’s time to get the job done.
When taking notes with BugMe!, you can insert URLs, email addresses and phone numbers which are all recognized by the app, allowing you to jump from the app to a call, email or website seamlessly. You can flag notes for prioritization, as well as use the search to find particular notes. The app also works from the calendar, so you can create reminders about an event, and even share it via SMS or email.
Although WES 2010 isn’t until late April, we have a great contest to help 2 lucky people get there for free. The recession has hit a lot of companies’ budgets and conference dollars are hard to come by these days. The good folks at GSX are therefore helping out.
To enter for 1 of 2 free trips to WES 2010, all you need to do is the following:
Between now and Dec 15th, email feedback@gsx.net with Promo2010 to schedule a one hour one-on-one demo on GSX’s BES, Domino, Sametime or Exchange monitoring solutions.
By doing so, you will be automatically entered to win a fully paid trip to WES 2010. That includes air fare within the continental US, Hotel at the show and entrance fee to Lotusphere.
Hope to see you at WES and if you got there through BlackBerry Cool, you owe the us 1 coffee (they’re free).
Bla1ze over at CB found OS 5.0.0.371 for the BlackBerry Bold 9700. This is a small step over the shipped OS 5.0.0.330 and while it’s not obvious what improvements come with this increment, it’s always fun to play with the latest OS build. The usual unofficial OS caveats apply.
The Next Web got the scoop on a Foursquare app for BlackBerry that is trickling out of beta soon. The app is supposed to go live “early December,” and with about 50 beta testers already using it, the app should be coming out any day now.
Foursquare has around 100,000 users in their community that share information about their city and use the service to find like-minded individuals and possibly friends. The Foursquare API is available to developers, so we may see more applications building its functionality into their apps.
