TetherBerry, which has been installed on over 60,000 BlackBerries in the past 9 months, will be re-branding to Tether. The app will soon be available in App World, and will come with the ability to tether over Bluetooth. It’s awesome of RIM to allow these types of applications in their store while AT&T and Apple are adamant about blocking them.

In celebration of the rebranding, Tether is 50% off until January 10th.

On a side note, if you’re an Android user, or know one, they’re accepting beta testers.

Pong Release a BlackBerry Case That Cuts Radiation by 60%

Pong have announced their BlackBerry Curve case that supposedly redirects all cell phone radiation away from the user’s head. The protective case claims to reduce users’ exposure to radiation by over 60%, and has been verified by FCC-certified laboratories. According to Pong, the case works by using principles of antenna theory and physics to channel the emitted radiation up and away from the phone. Full signal strength is maintained, so that the phone’s function and battery life are not compromised. The case fits the BlackBerry Curve 8300, 8310, 8320, and 8330 and costs $49.95. While the price seems pretty high to me, I’m sure there are some out there who are incredibly paranoid about mobile radiation and are happy to pay.

Coming Soon: Laptop Backup Solution for BlackBerry from Clickfree

clickfree microsd

Clickfree and Storage Appliance are set to launch the Clickfree Traveler for BlackBerry; a micro-SD memory card with preinstalled backup software that lets you back up as much as 16 gigabytes of data. Due to the limitations of the micro-SD Card, the solution won’t be helpful for backing up video, but it will be ideal for documents and smaller files. The backup process will be much like how you backup your BlackBerry on your laptop: just plug in and run the software. The data is also encrypted and accessible via password.

The Clickfree Traveler for BlackBerry ships on April 5th. No word yet on price. The company is also going to launch a larger 32GB micro-SD Card, for those who need more backup space.

Nexus One and What it Means for BlackBerry and iPhone

I love competition! There is no doubt that the introduction of the iPhone raised the high water mark for mobile user interface and forced RIM to bring the BlackBerry Storm to market quickly. RIM and Verizon perhaps launched more hastily than they ought to have, but nonetheless the end result was the spawning of the mobile app revolution.

When the software powerhouse Google announced yesterday they are selling the GSM neutral Nexus One Smartphone direct, my initial thought was “I hope they recognize that they just stepped on a landmine!” In my opinion, this is the boldest (no pun intended) move a software company can make. After all, Microsoft has failed repeatedly to successfully make this leap to hardware manufacturer. The nuances of running a hardware manufacturing business is drastically different than writing software and making support tweaks. Furthermore, as I learned when I worked for Digital Equipment Corporation: it doesn’t matter how amazing your product is, you still need to market and sell it.
