The Distimo Report is a monthly look at the five big application stores: Apple App Store, BlackBerry App World, Google Android Market, Nokia Ovi Store and Windows Marketplace for Mobile. This month’s report is based on December 2009 data, and has some interesting findings including:
- In Google Android Market, 65% of the publishers are located in the United States, 12% in the United Kingdom, 20% in Europe and 3% in Japan.
- Publishers located in Europe price their applications highest with an average of $4.42, which is 49% higher than publishers located in the United States.
- Applications in Apple App Store, Google Android Market and Nokia Ovi Store are priced at around $3.50. Windows Marketplace for Mobile and BlackBerry App World are more expensive, averaging $6.99 and $8.26 respectively.
- Because of Microsoft’s market validation guidelines and additional fees for distributing applications in more than one country, the number of applications available in some countries is only a small percentage (<5%) of applications available worldwide.

BerryScoop is reporting that Verizon will be offering a BlackBerry data plan within the next 90 days as part of their prepaid service. We don’t know what devices will be available on a prepaid service, but my guess is it will be relegated to the older and cheaper devices. The data plan is rumored to run an additional $35 on top of the voice plan. Any Verizon users looking for a prepaid plan?

Elecite’s latest theme is called Keen, and it has 6-8 customizable photo icons, a weather slot, 4-5 (locked) quick access icons and a quick preview Today area. This theme is particularly good for displaying wallpapers. You can hide all of your display icons by pressing the close button, and hitting the “space” key will bring them back.
Check out Keen over at Elecite to see more of this theme in action.

BGR is reporting that the BlackBerry Tour 9630 is on its way out at Best Buy. This is a regular occurrence whenever a device update is coming and I’m sure we’ll be seeing the Tour2 9650 in the next few months. I’m definitely looking forward to a trackpad and WiFi.

Motorola has filed a complaint with the US International Trade Commission, alleging that RIM has infringed on five of Motorola’s patents. According to Motorola, RIM used to license these patents, but the deal expired in 2007.
The Motorola patents in the dispute relate to Wi-Fi access, application management, user interface and power management. The company wants the ITC to investigate RIM’s use of the patented technology. It is seeking an exclusion order that would bar imports of BlackBerry devices into the US and stop further sales of infringing products that have already been imported.

Xobni’s Manager of Support, confirmed over LinkedIn that Xobni for BlackBerry will be released “towards the end of February.” Our good friend Brett made sure to screengrab the statement and throw it up on his Posterous blog, so we’ll be holding Xobni to that time frame. A month feels like a long time but I guess it’s not so bad considering this is such a cool app.
