I just read a cool article over at PCPro about 5 GPS-based games you can play with your BlackBerry. While most of the newer devices have GPS, the ones that don’t can use cell-tower triangulation which in urban centers is just as reliable.
1. Geocaching
Geocaching is probably the best GPS-based game you can play with your BlackBerry. It has a huge community and you can get involved at geocaching.com. The idea is simple, drop a package, log its coordinates, and someone else will find it. Blackstar for BlackBerry is the app to check out for this game.
2. Geodashing
Geodashing is a game about points not prizes. The goal of the game is to visit as many randomly selected locations as possible, which are chosen by the Geodashing computer. To score points, you must come within 100 meters of the coordinates, and be able to describe the location or prove you’ve been there with a picture.

If I had to boil the week down to the biggest news, I’d say it’s centered around the news that Verizon is dropping a ton of older devices from their inventory. There were rumors from analysts that the Storm (probably the 9530) was going to be nixed because it wasn’t selling well and there were so many complaints about the device. Soon after the leak we saw some official looking documents saying Verizon will discontinue the Storm 9530, Curve 8330, 8830 and Pearl Flip 8230. While I like the idea of killing old devices in favor of newer ones, I just hope prices continue to come down. Hit the jump and catch up on everything that happened this week.

BerryReview posted OS 5.0.0.509 for the Bold 9000 and Curve 8900. The servers at RapidShare are overloaded right now so hopefully someone out there can comment a mirror link. Otherwise, sit on the site and wait for an opening.

BBleaks have found OS 5.0.0.530 for the Tour 9630 which is an awesome leap forward. I haven’t tried it out yet for myself, but I’d be interested to see if there are any significant performance improvements.

We’ve been talking about smartphones games a lot lately on BlackBerryCool and the latest Distimo report got me looking for a good game in App World. I found one of my favorite feature phone games Super KO Boxing by Glu that I didn’t realize was available for BlackBerry. This isn’t news and the game has been around for a long time, but if you’re in the mood for a solid game, I would definitely recommend it.
To get a good idea of the gameplay, check out the video Doug and I made for QB for Super KO Boxing 1.
Here is the review I wrote for QB. The game is the same on BlackBerry and while I reviewed the first version, the 2nd is a good improvement with more guys and better graphics, so you can expect a similar experience.
Super KO Boxing 2 is available in App World. It’s a little pricey at $6.99 but you’ll get some good play out of it.
Let me know if you like this game as much as me, or if you think I’m crazy.
