"If you do a simple search for “browser” on the App Store, you’ll see that there are actually 15+ non-Apple web browsers that you can download"

Actually, they are not browsers. They are just alternative user interfaces for the existing browser (engine) on the phone.

So no, there are no other browsers on the iPhone, just different UIs for Safari.

While I agree with the sentiment you are attempting to express, I do want to point out one discrepancy: Apple DOES allow third-party apps into the App Store that compete with their first-party apps like their Safari browser. If you do a simple search for "browser" on the App Store, you'll see that there are actually 15+ non-Apple web browsers that you can download - some paid and some free... However, none of them are from Opera.

So far as I can tell Opera Mini is a ton better than the installed browser. I've been using Mini 5 Beta on my 8330 that is running OS 5.0. I can say right now that with a keyboard blackberry it is a night and day difference between Opera and RIM's browser. It has the RIM browser beat to hell and back in terms of speed and that is with my rather limited hardware. I look forward to the day when I can try it out when I upgrade to a 9700.

I am curious to know if Opera fixed the keyboard API. When I tested the beta they had out and I pressed and held a key to capitalize it it just repeated it. It was like they wrote their own keyboard handler instead of using the native API available to them. It was a bad idea because I removed it just for that simple fact. We all know how the BlackBerry works so don't change it please :)
