TELUS have announced they now offer over-the-air DRM-free music tracks to Canadians. Their catalog has over 2.5 million tracks including both Anglo and Francophone artists. The tracks are available right from your device, and the following BlackBerrys are supported:
- BlackBerry Storm2
- BlackBerry Tour
- BlackBerry Storm
- BlackBerry Pearl Flip
- BlackBerry Curve 8330
- BlackBerry Curve 8530
The part of the program that I don’t fully understand is their “DRM-Free upgrade offer”. TELUS are offering users to “upgrade” eligible DRM files to become DRM-Free. This service costs 30 cents per trade with a bulk upgrade available. I guess this is helpful for users who are on iTunes, Yahoo! etc and want to move their music around, but I’m under the impression these services all offer premium DRM-free anyways.

Cellcrypt have launched a WiFi version of their voice encryption software under a 90 day free trial. We’ve talked about Cellcrypt a few times on BBCool, and it’s nice to be able to try out the software under trial conditions. While it’s too bad that you can only use it over WiFi, they’ll hopefully open it up down the road. Personally, I’m wondering if this software could be used as a VoIP alternative, enabling users to make cheap long distance calls.
Try the Cellcrypt over WiFi app on a free trial.

Today we saw a screenshot of a desktop install of OS 5.0.1.205 and BBCool reader apol was good enough to provide a link to the OS file. I opened the file but I’m not really sure how to proceed. As you can see from the above screenshot, it says OS 5.2.0.43 and I’m sure if I was able to get past the prompt “Connecting to Bootrom” it would show the app version, but sadly my technical skills only take me this far. With the link to the OS file, maybe you can have more luck. It would be great if this was of value to someone in the hybrid OS community, and we could see what features are in 5.0.1.205.
Download OS 5.0.1.205 for the BlackBerry 8910.

The Facebook BlackBerry app by RIM doesn’t seem to be refreshing ever since the new Facebook layout. This is therefore the perfect time to talk about how useless this app really is. Here are my Top 5 pet peeves about the BlackBerry Facebook app.

In the latest interview by Rob Woodbridge of Untether.tv, we get a look at a new company called Tristan Interactive. Tristan’s CEO Chris McLaren talks about his past and what led to the creation of this startup.
Tristan Interactive is an interesting company that is partnering with museums and galleries to build custom tour environments that go far beyond the typical self-guided tours. These tours are powered by a platform they call Autour. According to Tristan:
Autour is a platform for creating interactive museum guides for mobile devices, including iPhone, iPod, and Blackberry. Autour provides museums a complete technology solution to create, manage, and deploy multimedia content on over 40 types of mobile devices (and growing.)
The autour platform offers the most on-device features, the lowest operating costs, and fastest time to market of any interactive multimedia solution – significantly superior to both traditional rental devices and in-house software solutions.
In this interview, Rob and Chris talk about the Tristan, the challenges of creating apps for multiple platforms, and the history of carrier billing. Definitely worth watching.
