When I was in Scandinavia meeting with Opera, along with the lucky BBCool reader who won the trip, I got to talking with them about RIM’s acquisition of Torch Mobile. The guys at Opera are really smart and gave me some insight into what a browser really is. A browser is really a combination of 50-80 mini apps, that all serve various functions such as understanding the HTML/CSS. WebKit is a core technology within the browser. There are other core technologies that can be used to build a Browser: Presto, Gecko, Trident etc.
The acquisition of Torch Mobile meant that RIM now controls a few of the developers who are contributors to WebKit’s source code. The Webkit platform, while Open Source, doesn’t allow just anyone to manipulate the base code. There is a relatively small group of contributors from Apple, Nokia, Google, various Universities, and now RIM.

I was on the phone with Philip Gronvold, US Manager of Business Development at Opera Software recently, and he told me Opera Mini will be available in App World during this quarter. Apparently, the news is already public and was casually slipped into a press release somewhere, but I can’t find it from Google. Maybe an adept reader will find the news and comment a link.
This news is really interesting because it highlights one of the major advantages of going with BlackBerry versus Apple. RIM doesn’t fear competition, they embrace it. Apple would never let any third party application compete with a first party application such as a browser. It would be really incredible if RIM opened up more of their APIs to Opera, allowing them to integrate more into the BlackBerry platform.

It seems we’re getting much closer to the Pearl 9100′s release date as more pics are getting leaked. The latest pics show the About screen, giving us some details about what OS the device is currently working with (OS 5.0.0.426) and confirming that the Pearl 9100 does in fact use 3G bands. Rumor has it that the device will go to T-Mobile, WIND, Rogers and AT&T, meaning lots of customers are going to get their hands on this one. More pics after the jump.

Virgin Mobile Canada have launched their HSPA+ network piggybacking on the Bell infrastructure. The network has expected download speeds of up to 21.6 megabits per second and uploads of up 5.76. Virgin Mobile are also offering the BlackBerry Bold 9700 at $149.99 with a 3 year contract or $549.99 without contract.
