Yes exactly! We will always own the API but not your app or your code.
We're tying to get out to the community to make a relationship with them
(you).

We are a start up as well (been in the market for 4 years) but we had some
help from VCs and now are becoming big enough that we can start giving back
to the community and work with the developers and entrepreneurs who really
care about pushing forward. Cdn business listings today cost about $50k to
$200k depending on the vendor. We're really disrupting their business model
by giving it away for free.

Hopefully the contest will get some good entries!

Hi Amy,

Thanks for your reply. I may have misunderstood the contest. My interpretation was that Canpages would own the code after submission, so that Canpages could use and market the app themselves afterwords. From your response, it seems that the developer would still own the code and there would be opportunity to pursue further opportunities as a partnership.

The Grand Prize is $5,000 with 3 winner up prizes of $1,000. The real opportunity as we see it (Amy here Director Bus. Dev) is the value of the data 1.3m business listings and if the app is something we see potential in the ability to sit down and see if we can partner with the developer ie monetization. We're also hoping to some day be able to feed our local advertisers in apps for monetization. Agree the Prize isn't the end all its a start to what could be a good partnership.

$5000 for first prize? That's a pretty skimpy prize considering that it only goes to the winning entry. I guess there might be some beginner programmers who might give this a shot, but those with much experience probably have plenty of better opportunities.
