Verizon BlackBerry Tour OS 5.0.0.591 now Officially Available

We heard rumblings that a big OS 5 update was on its way for the Verizon Tour 9630 and it looks like its now available. The update comes as OS 5.0.0.591 and we’ve heard some good things about this update. Here are a couple user reports so far:

This update includes the ability for users to add Push to Talk to their BlackBerry plan. From the press release, users who add PTT will be able to try it out on a free trial, and it costs $5 per month afterwards. Features of PTT include:

Communicate with one person or a team with the push of a button
Initiate and participate in group calls with up to 50 participants
Check colleagues’ availability for a Push to Talk call with the Presence feature
A single device and phone number for both Push to Talk and voice calls
Online contact management tool for the entire organization

Has problems: 1) multiple clicks on browser link needed in many cases. Seems to be a known issue. Where is the fix ( or when)?
2) Standby mode via mute no longer exists. RIM removed feature.
3) Some sites (eg: Google News) not adding extra sections – even if they exist on your computer version. Not logical.
4) DOES have some nice new features – including a zoom in on browser by using menu button. It SEEM to work faster – but hard to change icon folders.

You will have to reinstall application when this process is over so make sure you have time to do that before installing it. It is working great but it was a time issue with me that I didn't plan for after the download.

Not a fan of the new version. There are issues with the browser – links taking multiple clicks. The message folder icons reverted all to generic images – Yahoo, especially, is no longer differentiated from the rest. Game stats were all reset as well.

I have had multiple issues with my phone since updating to this new OS. Periodically, my calls will drop and I will get a message stating the “call was lost”. Once that happens, the only way I can make or answer any calls is if I reboot my phone.

It will also randomly flip between the Eastern and Central time zones for no apparent reason. Needless to say – I'm not impressed at all. I would think with a company as big as Blackberry – they would have done a little more R&D on this one before releasing it…
