More Details of the Upcoming BlackBerry Shield

Comments

The BlackBerry Shield sounds like a great idea in that RIM will be able to offer some of the great functionality of SmrtGuard, to all BlackBerry users. On the other hand, it’s generally bad business for RIM to be competing with people like SmrtGuard, who have done so much to make the BlackBerry better for their users. The message RIM are saying is: don’t bother making anything useful, because we’ll steal your idea and make it ourselves.

Recently leaked BlackBerry Shield info suggests we’ll be seeing:

  • Remote Device Wipe – in case of loss of the terminal, just log in to BB Shield to remove all data from the device and / or memory card.
  • “Lost & Found” Screen – you can customize the sentence on the screen to display that the BlackBerry is lost and show any information about the content (i.e. “take me please“).
  • The ability to remotely set the password on the BlackBerry.
  • A loud bell alarm – useful option, even if you’ve lost your BlackBerry (at home) – once you’ve activated this option, your BB will ‘behave’ loud sounding an alarm, which will hopefully prompt a passerby (or yourself) to pick up your lost BlackBerry.
  • Tracking capability – based on the GSM transmitters and / or GPS position that is constantly monitored in the BlackBerry unit, and there may be the possibility of seeing it on the map (like Google Maps) from the BB Shield dashboard.
  • Backup – create wireless backup and restore, which can be set automatically exercise in the given time intervals

In the meantime, you should definitely be checking out SmrtGuard-Free, a product every BlackBerry user should have.

Premium Rainbow BlackBerry Theme by Hedone Design

Comments

HedoneDesign have a new theme called Rainbow that features 6 user customizable icons (8 on the Storm), as well as 4 predefined icons (3 for the Storm), as well as a Today Preview and WeatherBug slot. This theme is very wallpaper friendly but I recommend sticking to the rainbow background. It reminds me of some of the preloaded wallpapers from BlackBerry but with a rainbow color scheme.

More information about the Rainbow Theme available in the BlackBerryCool Store.

BIS 3.0 Coming March 28th with Gmail Sync in Spring 2010

Comments

We have been talking about the coming BIS 3.0 update for a while now and there has been a lot of speculation as to whether Gmail sync will be included in the update. It seems the BIS 3.0 update will come to North America this weekend, on March 28th, and 2-way Gmail sync will come later, by Spring 2010.

The official documents tell us exactly when this update will occur:

  • There will be scheduled network maintenance by Research In Motion (RIM) affecting BIS customers between 0100 CT / 0200 EDT on March 28th and 0500 CT / 0600 EDT on March 28th.
  • The estimated duration of impact is 4 hours and affects 100% of BIS customers.

Upcoming Facebook 1.8 and 2.0 Updates Mostly Performance-Based

Comments

The Facebook app isn’t the greatest first party app for BlackBerry, but it’s definitely one of the hottest in terms of demand. With almost every single BlackBerry user on Facebook, a good Facebook app is crucial. The coming updates to Facebook, 1.8 and 2.0, will mostly address performance issues, but we haven’t seen much in the way of new features. Personally, I think this app needs to support Facebook Apps, and it will truly be the app we all want.

Upcoming features for Facebook 1.8 (coming May 2010) include:

  • Faster load times
  • Video uploading
  • Replacing BIS-E notifications with BlackBerry Push APIs

Facebook 2.0 (coming end of year) will feature:

  • User interface redesign
  • People Search

One of the downsides to RIM making an app is that updates come much slower than we would all like.
