Cricket Wireless is expected to carry BlackBerrys later this year, with some decent calling plans, but average data rates. There is no word on which device or price, but we do know the price isn’t to exceed $299. Cricket is a small, contract-free carrier with over 4 million users, and they it mostly covers metropolitan areas. Expect some of the following rates from Cricket:
- $30/month unlimited calling
- +$10/month unlimited text, MMS and voicemail
- $50/month email and GPS services (unsure if the above is included)
- $60/month for data in the form of “mobile video clips and 100 minutes of roaming”

Shortcuts are an important part of the BlackBerry experience. Apps such as SuperQWERTY, QuickLaunch and even Vlingo, all help to make everything a little more efficient, by reducing the amount of input required.
Putting a shortcut on your homescreen is a great app idea because it leaves both a shortcut and a visual reminder of the person you often talk to or a website you often visit. A little while ago Iconify by emacberry launched, providing two versions of their quick icon app. With either the 15 or 50 link version, you can create icons on the homescreen to dial, mail or PIN message a contact, or visit a website. Recently, QwikClique by The Jared Company launched, offering 5 shortcut icons to contacts of your choice. As both these apps serve similar functions, lets compare their feature sets:

There is a leaked version of BBM 5.0.0.65 courtesy of Nathanix circulating that may have some performance fixes over the official version 5.0.0.57. It could also come with some performance deterioration as this is unofficial software. The only way to tell is by checking it out. Anyone taking the plunge with me?
Download BBM 5.0.0.65 from Nathanix.

We have talked a few times about Employee Liable vs Corporate Liable smartphones. A corporate liable device is one that the company distributes and is responsible for the cost and maintenance of the device. Generally, this device is locked down and restricted, so as to minimize cost and security risks to the organization. An employee liable device is purchased by the employee, and brought into the organization. This device may or may not be compatible with the network, and it’s up to executive management and the IT department whether or not said device will be allowed.
It is widely reported that employee liable smartphones are on the rise, and in speaking with Ahmed Datoo of Zenrprise, we discussed the possibility that it could be largely attributed to the recession. Employee liable devices are less expensive than corporate liable devices, and while they may carry added headaches for IT, the need for cost cutting has given a large number of consumer smartphones the green light.
