Foursquare for BlackBerry Version 1.8.4 Now Available

Comments

Foursquare version 1.8.4 is now available for download. This version update focuses on a lot of small improvements, including fixes to permissions and focus/scrolling on the Places screen.

Foursquare is a great service but I’m starting to get frustrated with the time it’s taking for businesses to adopt the Foursquare Deals option. The value of Foursquare really comes to life when you can check-in to venues, get a deal, or become the mayor and get VIP treatment. These sorts of deals are readily available in Foursquare’s home of New York, but in smaller cities, especially in Canada, the word isn’t spreading as fast. So if you have a business, register it with Foursquare and get some promotion going!

More Details on the Upcoming BlackBerry Tablet aka BlackPad

Comments

The BlackBerry tablet is still sitting in the rumor mill right now and there are very few details about what to expect. The Street is already calling it the BlackPad and deeming it a failure while the product is still in its early engineering phase. This sort of judgment is definitely much too early to make, but it doesn’t look great for RIM to follow Apple yet again in a ‘keeping up with the Johnsons’ sort of way. App World seemed like an after-thought after Apple’s success with an embedded app store, and the success of the iPad seems to have engineers and VPs at RIM scrambling around to pull a tablet of their own together. If the BlackPad is actually the product name, it’s yet another indication that RIM is just following Apple’s lead.

According to Rodman Renshaw analyst Ashok Kumar, RIM was going to make an Android-powered tablet, but backed out and has since decided to power their BlackPad with OS 6. Kumar also says the BlackPad will use Marvell’s Armada processor, rather than go with Intel.

Spotberry GPS Toolset Features Compass, Speedometer and Track Log Recorder

Comments

Spotberry let us know that they have released version 2.3.20 of their GPS toolset app for BlackBerry. Spotberry features a few useful tools that leverage the BlackBerry’s GPS, and allows you to do some pretty fun navigation things that might be popular with the geocaching crowd. SpotBerry features a compass, speedometer and track log recorder, as well as features such as an automatic shut-off if battery levels are low.

In speaking with some developers about the GPS on BlackBerry, I’ve heard the altitude readings can be very inaccurate, so it will be interesting to see how this app handles the readings.
