Yet another week in BlackBerry and this week belongs to the Sprint BlackBerry Bold 9650. The Bold 9650 is essentially the Tour 2, but with a Bold brand so as to not offend current Tour users. BlackBerryCool has the device in-house and it’s a really awesome piece of hardware. The Tour has an excellent form factor which is a little bigger and heavier than say the 9700, making it ideal for someone with hands that are a little bigger. Expect a full review shortly. In terms of apps, Matt is in search of the best games for BlackBerry and has been reviewing several a week. This week he reviewed Age of Empires and Boeing Bomber! for BlackBerry. Have you played any games you really liked or disliked? Let us know.
Click through after the jump to catch up on a week of BlackBerry news.

Biffa is one of the largest garbage collection companies in the UK, and they’ve recently committed to giving 1,500 employees a BlackBerry. The Telegraph reported them as “BlackBerry-type” devices which is a strange way of putting it considering these are true BlackBerrys manufactured by RIM. The devices are also called “rugged BlackBerrys” which hints at the fact that they come with some additional protection.
The new BlackBerry-imbued Biffa employees will be able to take photos of overfilled garbage cans, or catch households who have put general waste in their recycling. This is surely going to concern up the number of infractions detected and may result in more by-law tickets issued. The Biffa BlackBerrys will also be used to track the location of garbage trucks to ensure binmen don’t take a detour to the local pub.
The Biffa deal with Vodafone costs £1.75m for 3,100 devices including “regular” BlackBerrys, dongles and 3G data cards. We’re not sure what model of device, but I’m sure the Biffa team would enjoy the Bold 9700. The deal sounds so sweet I might just quit my day job and become a Biffa binman.

The object of Boeing Bomber! is to bomb an entire skyline so that you may land safely atop rubble. It’s a one button game so when the center of your Boeing bomber is directly atop the tallest of the quazi-futuristic condos, click to release a bomb. There is no room for error and you must always bomb the tallest building or you will crash into it on your next pass.
The Game plays like a Commodore 64 game and builds zen-like patience in the early stages because of the slow speed of your plane. Later levels can be quite challenging and exhilarating because completing a stage causes your bomber to travel faster and faster. The trickiest part to every level is when the next-tallest building is on the very left. You’ll only have an instant to drop a bomb and you should be ready when the plane is almost done its last pass.

Sprint has a great history of being open with their unlocking process and Sam over at Cellfservices tells us that the Bold 9650 will come factory unlocked. Users will be able to use EDGE on all North American GSM providers and 3G pending on the GSM frequencies of the prepaid carrier they decide to use in their country of travel.
It’s almost certain that the Verizon Bold 9650 will not come unlocked. None of their devices come unlocked including the older 8830 model. Also, the first Bold 9650 Cellfservices unlocked back on January 28, 2010 (preproduction) was locked to the Verizon network.
So if you’re looking to pick up a Bold 9650, keep in mind the Sprint version is unlocked.

I recently received emails from both Tether and Smrtguard promoting each others’ application. Tether is a simple tethering solution for BlackBerry, and Smrtguard helps to protect your device from theft or loss. The two apps don’t have any overlap in terms of features or offerings, which makes it a great partnership to promote one another. As both apps have an incredible amount of downloads, the email list they’ve accumulated must be very significant and I’m sure this campaign resulted in a significant amount of downloads and sales for each other. If you have an application, this sort of marketing campaign could be really beneficial, and more developers should look to make these types of partnerships.
