According to the latest research from Gartner, the number of smartphones sold worldwide has jumped 49 percent from a year earlier to 54.3 million units. BlackBerry is now the world’s 4th largest manufacturer of mobile devices and the 2nd most popular smartphone after Symbian.
Android has leap-frogged Windows Mobile and Linux now represents 10 percent of smartphones shipped. Nokia has declined by 4.5 percentage points to 44.3 percent as sales rose by one-third, lagging behind the market’s growth. The iPhone is the third most popular smartphone after Symbian and RIM, with a 15.4 percent share of handsets that are open to third-party applications.
Smartphones now account for 17.3 percent of the industry’s phone sales, and Nokia reported last month that smartphones accounted for about 20 percent of its volume in the first quarter.

Prism Technologies does internet security technology management and licensing and accused RIM of violating a patent having to do with authentication systems. Prism has said that they have reached an agreement with RIM and the dispute is settled. “As a company we have reached a settlement with Research in Motion and are pleased with the result,” A.J. Bahou, Prism’s vice president and chief intellectual property officer, told Reuters. It’s not clear whether Prism has a valid claim to these patents or they’re just another patent troll. RIM is a huge company and everyone wants a piece of the pie.

Gwabbit has announced a free upgrade for both their Premium and Free versions that includes a new feature called “Flashback.” Flashback places a note in your inbox to remind you that you haven’t added a contact to your address book. When you open the note, a gwabbit alert is shown that allows you to click and save the contact as usual. When you save contacts, you’ll find an item in your inbox, marked with the gwabbit wabbit. This keeps you informed of the contacts you added to your address book. Also, a gwabbit counter at the top of the screen shows the number of unopened/unsaved contacts detected by gwabbit, similar to the counter for unopened emails or SMS messages.
Personally, I think users should avoid the free version of gwabbit, as it has a very aggressive marketing tool built-in that tells users their contact information has been added by gwabbit.
To download gwabbit or upgrade, visit App World.

There have been a lot of leaked OS updates lately but it’s always best to grab the official OS updates as they’ve been through carrier quality assurance. T-Mobile have released OS 5.0.0.586 for the Bold 9700, which tends to get the lion’s share of the OS updates these days. If you haven’t updated your device, now seems like a good time to do so.
Download the official OS 5.0.0.586 from T-Mobile.
