Enterprise Build of Poynt Now Available for BES Users

Comments

Multiplied Media has announced an enterprise build of their location based service app Poynt for users on a BlackBerry Enterprise Server (BES). Poynt has had several updates over the past year and now features the ability to connect users to local businesses, people, restaurants and movie theaters. Users can also discover movie trailers and show times, book dining reservations, compare local gas prices, view directions on a map, click-to-call a business or view a website.

For the latest BES version, MM has turned off update notifications to ensure BES users do not need to download the app directly when an update becomes available.

RIM Enters China With the BlackBerry Storm and BES

Comments

A while back we heard that RIM would be entering the Chinese market but in a strange move, RIM has decided to launch with BES and the BlackBerry Storm. China is a pretty crucial market considering its size, and you would think RIM would want to launch with an affordable and reliable device such as the Curve 8520, but instead they’ve gone with a device with one of the worst brand reputations in RIM’s hardware history. Forget about what you think of the Storm (some love, some hate), it’s still a curious decision.

If I had to guess, it probably has something to do with beating Apple in the Chinese touchscreen market. There is probably a lot of market research that says Chinese consumers are looking for more touchscreen smartphones, and RIM has decided they’ll be the ones to serve the demand. Personally, I think this is going to result in a lot of dissatisfied users, and if you’re going to pioneer a new market, why not choose a device such as the Bold and Curve, which carries a solid brand and reputation.

BIS 3.1 Features and Documentation Published by RIM

Comment

You have probably been enjoying the read/unread Gmail sync that comes with BIS 3.0 and everyone is looking forward to BIS 3.1. RIM has published the documentation for BIS 3.1, and the wireless contact sync features we can expect include:

Wireless Contact Synchronization
Two-way wireless synchronization with Alt-N MDaemon v11 via SyncML, Windows Live Hotmail and Yahoo! Mail contacts and the Address Book on the BlackBerry smartphone:

  • Synchronize contacts quickly and easily to the BlackBerry smartphone
  • Add or edit Contacts and the Contacts are automatically updated, whether they are updated on the computer or BlackBerry smartphone
    • Note: Wireless contact synchronization with Alt-N, Yahoo! Mail and Windows Live Hotmail occurs every four hours. This means that a delay of up to four hours may occur when making a change on the handheld or on the BlackBerry smartphone.

Underneath these features in the notes section, RIM has included some very important exceptions to the above features including:

    • Yahoo! Mail Categories/ Windows Live Hotmail Contact Groups/ Alt-N Groups are not supported in this release. Category and/or Contact Group distribution lists will not be synchronized.
    • The use of wireless contact synchronization with Yahoo! Mail and/or Alt-N requires BlackBerry Device Software 5.0 or higher and a Yahoo! Mail and/or Alt-N integration with BlackBerry® Internet Service.
    • The use of wireless contact synchronization with Windows Live Hotmail requires BlackBerry Device Software 6.0 and a Windows Live Hotmail integration with BlackBerry Internet Service.

Online Dating Apps, Mobile Sites and Tips for BlackBerry

Before the Internet, dating was like the Wild West. It was an untamed frontier of bar hook-ups and public introductions. 90s era dating reminds me about dating seminars on how to become more confidant and desirable. My favorite movie example of which is Tom Cruise’s character from the film Magnolia and his seminar: Seduce and Destroy.

The Internet has changed dating forever. In the early days of Internet dating, there was a stigma against it because of the disproportionate amount of male users. Nowadays women frequent online dating sites about as much as men, and the negative stigma got downgraded to “use caution”. Where I live there is almost no stigma whatsoever about online dating, probably because free services have reached a healthy 50/50 split of male and female users.

The BlackBerry can be the ultimate tool for online dating. The keypad for quick and accurate text entry is an edge that the BlackBerry has in cyber flirting by text, social network, or BBM. There is also a bunch of software available that can help you in a variety of ways.
