The latest Distimo report shows the highest ranked paid and free applications in BlackBerry App World, as well as other smartphone platforms such as Nokia’s Ovi, Google Android, Apple iPhone and Windows Mobile. In the May Distimo report, BlackBerry didn’t really have a presence in the “news and noteworthy” section. When it comes to applications, it seems themes are really dominating the lists. Themes are great for customizing your BlackBerry, but it would be good to see more rich applications in App World to demonstrate the power of the platform. Also, the utilities that come are in the top ranked lists seem as though they should be part of the OS and not third party apps. Applications such as QuickPull and MemoryBooster shouldn’t be something the user needs to download.
Something else to consider is the presence of first party applications in App World’s Top 10. I understand that App World is a good place to distribute first party apps, but RIM should consider leaving themselves out of the Top 10s and make more space for third party developers. A place in the Top section gets you more downloads which would really help a third party bring in more revenue, even for a free application.
The only true paid applications in the top ranks right now are:
- Pageonce Personal Assistant
- Calorie Tracker by Livestrong
Once themes are separated from apps, as they should be, and the OS gets an upgrade, it will be interesting to see the shift in downloads. The top paid applications list will probably include a few more games, more productivity applications, fewer apps that deal with OS frustrations and hopefully something we haven’t seen before.
