VQ Mileage Tracker is a highly copied and much liked BlackBerry app that automatically tracks your business mileage. The app now features the ability to automatically email users a mileage report every week, month or quarter. VQ uses a BlackBerry’s GPS along with in-vehicle Bluetooth to automatically determine when the user starts and ends a trip. Owners of vehicles without built-in Bluetooth can purchase a VQ Bluetooth Car Charger (a car charger that also simulates in-vehicle Bluetooth) or they can use the app in semi-automatic mode. ParkVu has announced the launch of their Music WithMe app for BlackBerry that allows you to wirelessly sync your iTunes playlists to your BlackBerry. The app does this over a WiFi or cell connection and automatically updates your playlists when you make changes on your desktop. This app runs in the background and works with the native media player so you can store and play your tracks as usual.

The OS 6 theme by WJD Designs was by far one of the best OS 6 themes available. The theme has recently been pulled from the Mobihand network in response to action by RIM legal and is no longer available.
This is bad news for a few reasons. For one, killing the OS 6 theme by WJD Designs sends a message to all theme developers that you could at any moment be at the mercy of RIM’s inflated and unfocused legal team. Second, it sends a message to the users that regardless of whether or not RIM will be able to support their device with OS 6, you may not be able to purchase a theme that tries to effectively mimic the UI and style. Third, it shows RIM’s legal and marketing departments are totally uncoordinated at the detriment of the organization at large.
Imitation is the highest form of flattery, and RIM should see the success of the OS 6 theme as a compliment. What if the company took the complete opposite approach and invited WJD Designs to help create an official OS 6 theme that would be given free to all users who do not have a device that can support OS 6? Not only would the entire community be appreciative, but you would be sending a message to theme developers that if you create something the community loves, you will be rewarded. Ottawa is a great city for BlackBerry and smartphone development. RIM’s App World team is located in Ottawa, and being a capital city, there are plenty of BlackBerrys floating around. There is also a large talent pool for mobile in the city as well and some of those bright individuals got together to demo their latest smartphone applications. The event was hosted by Rob Woodbridge, former CEO of Rove and the more interesting half of BlackBerryCool Untether’d.
The App Showcase event was a success and after the jump you can read all about the presenters and what they’re doing in the space. Stay tuned for the next event, where there will be more local companies showing off their applications. If you have a similar event in your area, send details to BlackBerryCool and we’ll help promote these companies as well.
Back in mid-April, Adobe’s CEO Shantanu Narayen said they would be on target to deliver Flash 10.1 for smartphones in the first half of 2010. Adobe pretty much made good on this and has delivered 10.1 to manufacturers such as Google and RIM to allow them to deploy it on their devices.
It should be interesting to see how long it will take for Flash 10.1 to be made available to BlackBerry users. Also, it’s not clear exactly how well it will perform on the device. According to Adobe, Flash 10.1 will allow users to experience rich Flash web content as well as play games, view animations, experience rich Internet applications (RIAs), data presentations and visualizations, ecommerce, music, video, audio and more.
