BlackBerryCool Roundup for the Week of July 5th

Comments

This week brought some fun editorial content worth checking out. The post “Dear BlackBerryCool: Is this a Contest a Hoax?” brought quite a few laughs. We’re still receiving emails from users who entered this contest and are shocked to discover that the contest is fake and the email doesn’t work. An email today from BBCool reader Dezray says: “I send the email to people I know and everything and guess what I don’t get a phone!”. Shocking! On a more positive note, there is a cool BlackBerry contest going on right now. You can win an African safari, a diving trip to the Great Barrier Reef, or a Costa Rican rainforest trip by catching the “Live Bold. Be Bold.” tour in your city. Other cool news this week includes the launch of Service Pack 2 for BES as well as video of the BlackBerry 9800 Torch Slider, 9670 Clamshell Oxford and Curve 9300 Kepler.

We recently posted about a promotion whereby you send an email to the developers and they give you a free copy of their app. What we didn’t mention, because the details weren’t included in the promotion materials, is that every customer who emailed the developers for their free app received the following email:

Win a “Bold” Adventure to Africa, Costa Rica or Australia

Comments

There’s a cool contest going on right now with RIM and Verizon to promote the new BlackBerry Bold 9650. This weekend in NYC, contest administrators will be going around and taking video testimonials on a BlackBerry Bold 9650 from Verizon. Participants will answer the question, “How do you live your life bold?” The boldest video wins one of three bold adventures: an African safari, a diving trip to the Great Barrier Reef, or a Costa Rican rainforest trip. Be Bold has already been to Boston and gathered up some great bold testimonials. After NYC, they’ll be headed to Chicago, Atlanta and San Francisco.

Readers can also join the Live Bold. Be Bold. Facebook fan page for a chance to win the new BlackBerry Bold (the fan page will be giving away one smartphone per week). For more free giveaways, BlackBerry fans can visit the events in their cities.

Click through for an example of the sort of video that is being submitted.

Free Caller ID App by Adaffix Available in App World

Comment

Caller ID apps are extremely fickle in that they often only work for certain carriers and in general, never work when you need them to. Privacy Star has a decent caller ID system but they tend to fall short when it comes to Verizon numbers. Adaffix has a free Caller ID app in App World that is worth a try although they seem to be very European centric. The app also instantly provides alternative merchants for a business that you have been unable to get through to. A 3G connection is required for the Caller ID feature and suppressed numbers cannot be identified.

Check out the Adaffix app for free in App World and let us know what you think.

RIM Working with Ford to Integrate BlackBerry Devices and Ford Sync

Comments

Ford Sync is a factory-installed, in-car communications and entertainment system developed by Ford and Microsoft. It is based on the Microsoft Auto platform. The technology is currently being updated with some features that directly involve Research in Motion. Ford Sync has a text message readback feature that allows customers to hear text messages without having to take their eyes off the road. In addition to this service, Ford is has integrated the latest Bluetooth Message Access Profile (MAP) into SYNC for all MyFord Touch-equipped vehicles. The MAP standard outlines a set of features and procedures used to exchange email, SMS, and MMS messages between devices. With MAP technology, even more phones will work with SYNC to read aloud incoming texts.

In addition, Research In Motion is already working with Ford to implement MAP on BlackBerry smartphones and enable SYNC audible text messaging capability across their product line, in an effort to foster industry-wide adoption.

Recently, we reported about the Ford Fiesta’s ability to read tweets in-car and this seems to be part of a wider initiative to integrate cars and BlackBerrys.
